Overview

Blockstream Info MCP server connects AI clients to Blockstream’s Esplora REST API for Bitcoin mainnet and testnet data. It exposes tools for blocks, transactions, confirmation status, addresses, mempool statistics, current height, and fee estimates. Mainnet is the default, while each tool accepts an optional network argument for testnet. Use it for keyless Bitcoin inspection, either through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Inspect a Bitcoin block by hash or height
  • Check transaction confirmation status
  • Review address activity and recent transactions
  • Compare mainnet and testnet fee conditions
  • Retrieve fee estimates for confirmation targets

Key features

  • Bitcoin mainnet and testnet queries
  • Block and transaction lookups
  • Address summaries and transaction history
  • Mempool size and fee histogram
  • Recommended sat/vB fee estimates
  • Local stdio and hosted MCP access

How Blockstream Info works

What the Blockstream Info MCP server does

The Blockstream Info MCP server exposes selected Bitcoin block explorer operations through the Model Context Protocol. Its data source is Blockstream’s Esplora REST API, using the mainnet endpoint at https://blockstream.info/api/ and the testnet endpoint at https://blockstream.info/testnet/api/. Mainnet is used when no network is provided.

Available operations include retrieving the current chain tip height, looking up a block by hash or height, and fetching transaction details by transaction ID. Other tools report a transaction’s confirmation status, summarize an address’s confirmed and mempool activity, list recent transactions for an address, inspect mempool size and fee distribution, and return recommended satoshis-per-vbyte fee levels by confirmation target.

The service is keyless. It is suited to agents that need read-only Bitcoin network information rather than wallet signing, transaction broadcasting, or general blockchain support.

How it works

The hosted option is exposed through Pipeworx gateway URLs. A scoped MCP endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/blockstream-info/mcp, while https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp provides the full gateway. The scoped endpoint lists the Blockstream Info tools together with shared Pipeworx tools, so its tool list is larger than the pack-specific operations. The gateway’s ask_pipeworx tool can route natural-language questions across the catalog, including this data source.

The same hosted gateway also provides HTTP tool calls. For example, a client can send a POST request to /v1/tools/tip_height with a JSON network argument. Tool details can be inspected with a GET request to the corresponding tool path.

For a narrower connection, the npm package runs locally over stdio. In that mode, MCP initialization, tool listing, and tool calls cover only the Blockstream Info operations; the shared gateway meta-tools are not included. The local process calls the same underlying data source without a gateway round trip.

Setup and configuration

Add the hosted MCP URL to a compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf. Alternatively, configure the local package with the command npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-blockstream-info. Running that command directly can confirm that the process starts and communicates over stdin and stdout.

No environment variables or API keys are specified. Pass network: "testnet" to an individual tool when testnet data is required; omit it or use mainnet for Bitcoin mainnet. The gateway and local package are separate deployment choices, not separate data implementations.

Tools and capabilities

The Blockstream Info MCP server provides these pack-specific tools:

  • tip_height returns the current block height.
  • block looks up a block using its hash or height.
  • transaction returns transaction details for a transaction ID.
  • tx_status reports confirmation status.
  • address returns chain and mempool statistics for an address.
  • address_txs lists recent transactions associated with an address.
  • mempool reports mempool size and a fee histogram.
  • fee_estimates returns recommended sat/vB values for confirmation targets.

Each tool accepts the optional network parameter where supported by the pack interface, with testnet selected by setting it to testnet.

Limitations and notes

This listing documents Bitcoin mainnet and testnet access through Esplora. It does not describe wallet controls, private-key handling, transaction submission, or support for other networks. Hosted pack connections include shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the pack tools, which increases the reported tool count. Use the local stdio package when only the eight listed operations are needed without those gateway additions.

The package is released under the MIT license. The authoritative set of tools for a hosted connection can change with the gateway and is stated by that connection’s initialization response; the local package exposes the pack-specific set described above.

Frequently Asked Questions about Blockstream Info

Blockstream Info is an MCP server that connects AI clients to Blockstream’s Esplora Bitcoin REST API on mainnet and testnet. It provides tools for current block height, blocks, transactions, confirmation status, addresses, recent address transactions, mempool data, and fee estimates.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-blockstream-info`. The package communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require a Pipeworx account or gateway connection.

Set the tool’s optional `network` argument to `"testnet"`. Without that argument, the server uses Bitcoin mainnet by default.

Yes, Cursor is listed as a compatible client for the hosted MCP endpoint. Configure it with `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/blockstream-info/mcp`, or use the local stdio package.

Yes, the Pipeworx gateway exposes HTTP tool calls under `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/`. For example, send a POST request to `/tip_height` with a JSON body containing the desired network.
