What the BlockDex MCP MCP server does
The BlockDex MCP MCP server provides eleven read-only tools for querying changing public information. Its directory tools search shadcn-compatible components, blocks, and hooks; published Claude Code skills, plugins, and marketplaces; agent instruction files; starter kits; and AI mobile-app builders. Results can include dependencies, install commands, quality scores, adoption rankings, or review-related details depending on the tool.
The server also covers current facts that are likely to change after a model's training cutoff. It compares AI model pricing and coding-tool routing, checks whether developer tools are still maintained, reports published pricing and free-tier limits for infrastructure services, and estimates monthly costs for a named stack. Two compliance lookups cover municipal website accessibility and nonprofit standing.
How it works
Tools read live or recently collected public sources and return structured results. Search and comparison inputs generally accept filters such as a query, category, board, tool, access level, quality threshold, verdict, or result limit. The component search is intended for shadcn-compatible resources across dozens of public registries, while maintenance and pricing tools provide dates or evidence that help an agent judge whether information is current.
The accessibility lookup accepts a US local-government domain and returns an index grade, violation counts, failing rules, the applicable ADA Title II deadline, and a public report URL. The nonprofit lookup accepts an EIN and checks the IRS auto-revocation list plus California charity delinquency and suspension lists. Compliance responses separate the outcome from a receipt describing when and where the check ran.
Setup and configuration
Install the package globally with npm install -g openlookup, or run it without a persistent install using npx -y openlookup. The default command starts an MCP stdio process. Passing --http 8974 starts streamable HTTP at http://localhost:8974/mcp.
Claude Code can register the process with claude mcp add openlookup -- npx -y openlookup. Claude Desktop requires an openlookup entry in claude_desktop_config.json, using npx as the command and -y openlookup as its arguments. The package does not require an API key or account.
Tools and capabilities
- Compare current AI model prices and observed routing by coding tool or budget band.
- Check release and commit activity before recommending a developer dependency.
- Look up service pricing and estimate a stack's monthly bill.
- Search component registries, agent skills, and public agent configuration files.
- Grade starter kits based on what is actually installed and wired up.
- Compare app-builder output against App Store review considerations.
- Retrieve accessibility reports for supported municipal domains.
- Check nonprofit status against the tracked IRS and California lists.
Limitations and notes
The BlockDex MCP MCP server reports data from the sources its tools consult; it is not a universal compliance or pricing authority. A clear nonprofit result only means that the EIN was absent from the two tracked lists, and the accessibility lookup applies to the CivicBinder index and its stated coverage. An unknown app-builder verdict represents an unsettled question rather than a positive or negative determination.
The project was previously published as compound-mcp; that npm package is deprecated and points to this repository. Use openlookup for installation. The included health checks distinguish process startup, tool enumeration, endpoint reachability, and successful tool responses, but the README states that no deployed HTTP endpoint is available.
