Overview

Bhagavad Gita MCP server exposes the Bhagavad Gita through three MCP tools backed by the Vedic Scriptures API and its GitHub Pages JSON data. It can list all 18 chapters, retrieve chapter metadata, or return an individual sloka with Devanagari, transliteration, several English translations, and commentary. Use the hosted Pipeworx endpoint for remote access, or run the package locally over stdio with npx. The integration is an independent, unofficial connection to the upstream scripture data.

Use cases

  • List chapter summaries and verse counts
  • Retrieve a verse in Sanskrit and transliteration
  • Compare multiple English translations
  • Build scripture study or reference workflows
  • Ask gateway-routed questions about Bhagavad Gita data

Key features

  • Lists all 18 chapters
  • Retrieves chapter metadata
  • Fetches individual slokas
  • Provides Devanagari and transliteration
  • Includes four English translations and commentary
  • Supports hosted MCP, HTTP, and local stdio access

How Bhagavad Gita works

What Bhagavad Gita does

Bhagavad Gita provides structured access to the Hindu scripture through MCP. Its three dedicated tools cover the work at chapter and verse level:

  • list_chapters returns all 18 chapters with chapter numbers, Sanskrit names, transliterations, English meanings, summaries, and verse counts.
  • get_chapter retrieves the same kind of metadata for one chapter selected by number.
  • get_verse retrieves one verse by chapter and verse number, including the original Sanskrit in Devanagari, transliteration, English translations, and commentary.

The English translation set includes versions attributed to Sivananda, Purohit, Gambirananda, and Adidevananda. This makes the server suitable for lookup, comparison, study, and applications that need both original text and translated material.

How it works

The data comes through the Vedic Scriptures API, with the upstream project serving keyless JSON through GitHub Pages at vedicscriptures.github.io. MCP clients can connect to the hosted Pipeworx route:

https://gateway.pipeworx.io/bhagavad-gita/mcp

The same gateway also offers a full endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp. The scoped route lists the Bhagavad Gita tools directly, while gateway connections also expose shared Pipeworx meta-tools such as ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, remember, and recall. The gateway can use ask_pipeworx to route questions across its catalog.

For direct HTTP calls, the gateway exposes tool routes under https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/. For example, list_chapters accepts a JSON POST request at /v1/tools/list_chapters.

Setup and configuration

Remote MCP clients can use this configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "bhagavad-gita": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/bhagavad-gita/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The package also runs locally as a stdio server using the npm package:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "bhagavad-gita": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-bhagavad-gita"]
    }
  }
}

Run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-bhagavad-gita directly to verify that the local process starts. The standalone mode handles MCP initialization, tool listing, and tool calls for the Bhagavad Gita tools without the gateway's shared meta-tools.

Tools and capabilities

  • Enumerate every chapter and its basic metadata.
  • Look up an individual chapter by number.
  • Retrieve a verse using chapter and verse numbers.
  • Compare multiple named English translations.
  • Read Sanskrit text in Devanagari alongside transliteration and commentary.

Limitations and notes

The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the upstream provider. Hosted connections include additional gateway tools alongside the pack's own tools, so the tool count shown by a client can exceed the three dedicated tools. The local package keeps its scope limited to the Bhagavad Gita tools and does not provide the gateway's cross-catalog routing.

The hosted gateway requires no account for its first calls. The local stdio option avoids a Pipeworx account and gateway round-trip.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bhagavad Gita

Bhagavad Gita is an MCP server that connects AI clients to Bhagavad Gita data from the Vedic Scriptures API. Its main tools list the 18 chapters, retrieve chapter metadata, and fetch individual verses with Devanagari text, transliteration, multiple English translations, and commentary.

Run it locally with npx using `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-bhagavad-gita`, or add that command and package to your MCP client's server configuration. You can also connect remotely using the Pipeworx MCP URL without installing the package.

Yes, Bhagavad Gita works with Cursor through the hosted MCP endpoint. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/bhagavad-gita/mcp` as an MCP server URL, or configure the local npx stdio command.

Yes, the gateway exposes HTTP tool routes under `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/`. For example, send a JSON POST request to `/v1/tools/list_chapters` to invoke the chapter-listing tool.

No, the local stdio package runs without a Pipeworx account or gateway round-trip. It serves only the Bhagavad Gita tools, while the hosted endpoint also includes shared Pipeworx gateway tools.
