bbox-mcp-server MCP server provides six geospatial tools over MCP. It converts bounding boxes between supported input and output formats, projects them to EPSG coordinate systems, generates H3 indexes, creates map links, searches OpenStreetMap through Overpass QL, and aggregates Overpass results into H3 cells.

The server is suited to agents that need structured spatial data rather than text-only answers. Typical tasks include finding OSM features within a region or radius, preparing a bbox for another API, checking the correct tags for a category, and comparing feature density across areas. Responses include a shareable link to an interactive map for visual checking.

How it works

Inputs can be supplied as coordinate-based bboxes, WKT, GeoJSON, or other formats supported by the conversion tool. Each tool accepts either a bbox or a location; natural-language location lookup requires a Mapbox access token. Without that token, callers can provide coordinates or geometry directly.

get_bounds handles six input formats, nine output formats, and projections identified by EPSG code. It can also return the bbox center and tile coordinates. get_h3_indices covers a bbox with H3 cells at resolutions 0 through 15 and can optionally return cell geometries or compact the result.

For OpenStreetMap workflows, list_osm_tags helps identify category tags before constructing an Overpass query. search_overpass runs the query within a bbox or explicit radius and returns structured elements with names, coordinates, and tags. aggregate_overpass_h3 performs a related query and returns counts grouped by H3 cell, along with GeoJSON hex boundaries.

Setup and configuration

Run the server through npx -y bbox-mcp-server in an MCP client, or install it globally with npm install -g bbox-mcp-server. Node.js 18 or newer is required. The README provides configurations for Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, and VS Code using the standard command-and-arguments stdio pattern.

No API key or signup is needed for bbox conversion, H3 generation, map-link creation, or the documented OpenStreetMap workflows. Set MAPBOX_ACCESS_TOKEN only when natural-language location search is needed. OVERPASS_API_URL can point to a custom Overpass service, while NOMINATIM_API_URL changes the geocoding endpoint. Natural-language locations depend on Mapbox configuration; coordinate or geometry inputs avoid that dependency. Overpass and OSM results depend on the configured public or custom endpoints and the data available from OpenStreetMap. H3 generation is subject to the MAX_H3_CELLS safety cap. The server uses a stdio configuration in the documented client examples, rather than requiring a separate hosted service.
