What backlink checker MCP server does
The backlink checker MCP server inspects webpages to determine whether they link to a target domain. Results can identify whether a link exists, whether it is dofollow or nofollow, the associated anchor text, and the page's HTTP status. It also provides a separate robots-rules check so a client can assess access guidance before requesting or auditing a page.
Checks are performed when requested rather than against a stored crawl or historical index. This makes each result a report about the current response from the page. The server is intended for backlink checks from MCP clients, including Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and other MCP hosts.
How it works
The server runs locally on the user's machine and does not provide a hosted endpoint. An MCP client starts the server process, then calls its tools with a page URL and the domain being checked. The server fetches the page, parses its links and anchor information, applies the relevant robots guards, and returns the result to the client.
Because nothing is stored, repeated calls retrieve the page again and may produce different results if the page changes or becomes unavailable. The backlink checker MCP server therefore does not provide historical backlink tracking, a persistent database, or a previously collected site index.
Setup and configuration
Claude Desktop users can install the provided backlink-checker.mcpb bundle from a release and open it with a double-click. Source installation is also available:
git clone https://github.com/theluckystrike/mcp-backlink-checker.git
cd mcp-backlink-checker
npm install && npm run build
After building, configure the MCP client to run node with the absolute path to dist/index.js:
{
"mcpServers": {
"backlink-checker": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["/absolute/path/to/mcp-backlink-checker/dist/index.js"]
}
}
}
The repository states that the package is not published on npm yet, so an npx -y @theluckystrike/mcp-backlink-checker installation should not be treated as a working setup path. A Pro license key is optional and applies only to the batch audit capability.
Tools and capabilities
link_check examines one page for a link to the target domain, link type, anchor text, and HTTP status.
robots_guard_check reads a page's robots rules before the page is accessed for checking or auditing.
link_audit checks multiple pages in one call and returns one verdict row per page. This tool requires the Pro tier.
license_activate activates a supplied Pro license key.
license_status reports the current licensing tier.
The free tier includes single-page checking and robots checks without per-day limits. Pro adds batch auditing through link_audit.
Limitations and notes
The backlink checker MCP server performs live, on-demand requests and does not retain results. It cannot provide historical comparisons or stored backlink data. Access behavior is also subject to the target page's availability and robots rules. Batch auditing is not included in the free tier and requires MCP_LICENSE_KEY to be activated before use.
