A side-by-side look at the Australian Law MCP and US Codex MCP servers: transport, auth, tools, quality signals, and the config to install either one in Claude, Cursor, Windsurf or VS Code.
Verdict: choose Australian Law MCP for legal work as a local process; choose US Codex for legal over a hosted endpoint. You can also run both side by side in one mcpServers block.

search_lawFinds Commonwealth acts and legislative instruments on the Federal Register of Legislation by title. Returns title ids for the other tools. Falls back to full-text matching when nothing matches by name.get_law_textReturns the latest compilation of a Commonwealth act or instrument. Without a section number it lists the table of sections; with one it returns that provision. Set full=true for the whole text, paginated.get_law_as_atReturns the compilation of a Commonwealth act that was in force on the given date — the register keeps every historical version. Same output shape as get_law_text.get_amendment_statusReports whether a title is in force, what its latest compilation incorporates, whether commenced amendments are still unincorporated, and which acts have amended it.compare_versionsShows what changed in an act between two dates: which sections were added, removed or reworded. Give a section number for a line-by-line diff of that provision.verify_citationsExtracts Australian statute citations from text and checks each against the Federal Register of Legislation: does the act exist, is it still in force, does the cited section exist in the current compilation. Use before presenting legal citations to a user. An upstream failure is reported as UNVERIFIED, never as a missing law.search_full_textSearches the body text of every act and instrument on the register for a phrase, ranked by relevance. Slower and broader than search_law.check_frl_healthPings the Federal Register of Legislation API and reports latency, so failures elsewhere can be attributed.searchSearch the full text of federal law: United States Code, Code of Federal Regulations, Public Laws, Congressional Bills, Executive Orders. Results are ranked across every corpus unless `corpus` narrows them, each with its citation, a link and the matching words. A query that is only a citation returns that document instead.fetchRead a document or page of the site as markdown: a code section with its notes, a title's or unit's contents, a public law, a bill (at any version), an executive order. Paths also reach the corpus indexes ("/usc", "/pl?congress=118", "/bills?congress=119", "/eo") and each code's releases ("/usc/releases"). Links in the markdown are paths this tool accepts.citationsWhat cites a document: each corpus's citations of a code section, law, bill or order, with the words that cite it, and for a statute the regulations issued under it. Lists come 50 at a time; `list` and `offset` page through one.historyHow a document came to be: for a code section, the laws that enacted and amended it and every release that changed its text; for a law or bill, its legislative history, each version linked to its text and to what changed from the one before.compareWhat changed in a code section between two releases: each provision added, removed, changed or renumbered, the edits marked <del> and <ins>. To compare versions of a bill, take the 'what changed' link from its history.Paste either block (or both) into your client config, e.g. claude_desktop_config.json or ~/.cursor/mcp.json. We only show a config when the install command is confirmed.
