Overview

Asub Ax MCP server exposes Statistics and Research Åland (ÅSUB) PxWeb data through tools for browsing subjects, inspecting table metadata, and submitting selection queries. Use `subjects` to find databases, folders, and `.px` tables, then call `table_meta` before constructing a `query_table` request. Results are returned as json-stat2, making the server suitable for agents that need structured Åland statistics. It is available through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Browse ÅSUB statistical databases and tables
  • Inspect PxWeb dimensions before querying
  • Run filtered Åland statistics queries
  • Return selected data as json-stat2

Key features

  • ÅSUB PxWeb subject-tree browsing
  • Table metadata and valid-value lookup
  • PxWeb selection queries
  • json-stat2 responses
  • Hosted MCP and local stdio access
  • Optional HTTP tool calls through Pipeworx

How Asub Ax works

What Asub Ax does

Asub Ax connects MCP clients to the ÅSUB PxWeb data service, covering the Statistics and Research Åland subject tree. It exposes three data-oriented tools:

  • subjects lists top-level databases, folders, and statistical tables.
  • table_meta returns a table's dimensions, labels, and permitted values.
  • query_table submits a PxWeb selection and returns the resulting dataset in json-stat2 format.

The intended workflow is to discover a table, inspect its dimensions, and then select values for each dimension in a query. Table paths use the ÅSUB hierarchy and end in .px, such as Statistik/BE/Befolkningsrörelsen/BE006.px.

This is an independent, unofficial integration and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by ÅSUB.

How it works

With the hosted connection, an MCP client connects to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/asub-ax/mcp. The scoped endpoint lists the three Asub Ax tools alongside shared Pipeworx gateway tools. Those shared tools can route broader questions through the Pipeworx catalog, while the pack-specific tools operate on ÅSUB data directly.

The same gateway also offers a full endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp. The full endpoint lists all available packs directly; the Asub Ax endpoint lists this pack directly while still exposing the gateway's shared tools.

A local installation runs over MCP stdin/stdout and exposes only the Asub Ax tools. It uses the same source and avoids the gateway round trip.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted MCP connection, add the following server entry to a compatible client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "asub-ax": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/asub-ax/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The package can also be launched locally with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "asub-ax": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-asub-ax"]
    }
  }
}

Run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-asub-ax directly to start the local server. The hosted gateway can also be called without an MCP client through HTTP. For example, post {"path":""} as JSON to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/asub_ax_subjects to list the top-level subjects. Initial gateway calls do not require an account.

Tools and capabilities

subjects accepts an optional path. An empty path lists the top-level databases, including Statistik and Utredning. A path such as Statistik or Statistik/BE lists child folders and tables. Folders are identified with type l; tables use type t and have IDs ending in .px.

table_meta requires the complete path to a .px table. Its response provides dimension codes, human-readable labels, and valid value lists. Use these values to construct a PxWeb request rather than guessing dimension codes or selections.

query_table requires a table path and a PxWeb query body. The body contains a query array with dimension codes and selection objects, plus a response declaration using the json-stat2 format. Keep selections narrow enough to remain below ÅSUB PxWeb's response cell limit.

Limitations and notes

The scoped gateway endpoint includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the three pack tools, so its tool list is larger than the Asub Ax tool list. The local package does not include those shared tools or cross-catalog routing.

The HTTP gateway and local package are different access modes for the same Asub Ax source. Use the hosted endpoint when a remote MCP connection is preferable, or the local package when the client should communicate over stdio without a Pipeworx account. MIT licensing applies.

Frequently Asked Questions about Asub Ax

Asub Ax is an MCP server that connects AI clients to Statistics and Research Åland's ÅSUB PxWeb data service. Its main tools browse subjects, retrieve table dimensions and valid values, and submit filtered table queries. Query results use json-stat2, and the server is available through Pipeworx or as a local stdio package.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-asub-ax` with the package as its command and argument. You can also use the hosted URL `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/asub-ax/mcp`, which does not require a local package.

First call `subjects` to locate a `.px` table, then call `table_meta` to obtain its dimension codes and valid values. Pass those selections to `query_table` in a PxWeb query body and request `json-stat2` as the response format.

Yes. Cursor is named as a supported MCP client in the setup examples. Add the hosted `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/asub-ax/mcp` URL to Cursor, or configure the local `npx` command for stdio access.

Yes. The Pipeworx gateway exposes HTTP tool endpoints, including `POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/asub_ax_subjects`. Send a JSON body such as `{"path":""}` to list the top-level ÅSUB subjects.
