Overview

ArXiv MCP server connects MCP clients to arXiv.org for preprint discovery and metadata retrieval. It exposes tools for free-text, author, and category searches, individual paper details, daily category digests, and author-collaborator graphs. The hosted HTTP endpoint uses JSON-RPC 2.0 and Bearer-token authentication, with anonymous access available within a monthly call limit. What ArXiv MCP server does

ArXiv MCP server provides an MCP tool surface over the public arXiv.org API. It supports several common research workflows: finding papers by text, author, or category; retrieving metadata and abstracts for a known paper; checking recently submitted work in a category; and exploring co-author relationships.

The search tool accepts optional free-text, author, and category criteria and can return up to 100 results. Paper lookup accepts identifiers such as 2024.04567 or arXiv:2024.04567v2. Category digests are organized around recent submissions and can optionally use a date. The author graph starts from a named author and can traverse collaborators for a requested depth; this tool requires a Team or Pro subscription.

How it works

The hosted service is available at https://arxiv-mcp.atlasword.workers.dev/mcp. It accepts HTTP POST requests carrying MCP JSON-RPC 2.0 messages. Clients discover the available schemas with tools/list and invoke operations with tools/call. A health endpoint is also available at /health.

Authentication uses an Authorization: Bearer <api_key> header. Anonymous callers can use the free tier for up to 100 calls per month per IP. Paid plans provide higher monthly and per-minute limits: Solo allows 2,000 monthly calls, Team 10,000, and Pro 50,000. Team and Pro accounts also unlock the author-collaborator graph. The service acts as a transport, authentication, and caching layer over the arXiv.org API rather than a separate research database.

Setup and configuration

ArXiv MCP server can be connected through mcp-remote, which forwards an MCP-aware client to the hosted endpoint. The command is:

Cursor and Claude Desktop use the same command in their MCP configuration, followed by a client restart. The README also identifies Windsurf and Continue.dev as compatible MCP clients. A paid API key can be obtained through the service's upgrade flow, while the free anonymous tier requires no signup. Keys are displayed once after checkout and can later be viewed or rotated through the account endpoints.
