How Artsonia MCP works

What artsonia-mcp does

The artsonia-mcp MCP server gives an AI client access to Artsonia student-art portfolio information and related parent or fan actions. The documented scope includes portfolio access, comments, fans, notification settings, feedback status, and artwork downloads.

Read-oriented access can be used to inspect portfolio content and related activity. Write operations are treated separately: posting a comment, inviting a fan, changing notification settings, marking feedback as read, and downloading artwork to disk all require confirmation before they take effect.

Tools and capabilities

The available functionality described in the project material includes:

  • Accessing student-art portfolios.
  • Working with comments.
  • Inviting or managing fans.
  • Changing notification settings.
  • Marking feedback as read.
  • Downloading artwork images with artsonia_download_artwork.

Artwork downloads have an additional filesystem safeguard. The destination must be inside one of the folders allowed by ARTSONIA_OUTPUT_DIR, unless inline downloads are enabled. Subfolders may be created under an allowed location. The server refuses destinations outside the configured locations before fetching or writing, and it does not write through a symlink.

How it works

The server is designed for MCP clients that can either display confirmation prompts or handle a two-step confirmation exchange. Claude Code can show a confirmation prompt for writes. Claude Desktop and claude.ai use a preview flow instead: the first call makes no change and returns a preview with a single-use confirmToken; a second identical call must provide that token to proceed.

Tokens expire after the configured time and are rejected if the requested state has changed between calls. MCP_CONFIRM_MODE controls behavior on clients without native confirmation prompts. The default, ask-user, requires approval in chat. auto lets the model use the token after reviewing the preview, while refuse blocks writes on those clients. Clients that support prompts continue to receive a real prompt.

Setup and configuration

Set ARTSONIA_OUTPUT_DIR to the permitted download roots. Multiple paths use : as the separator, or ; on Windows. By default, downloads may target ~/Downloads and ~/Pictures. When MCP_DATA_DIR is set for a hosted server, the default becomes $MCP_DATA_DIR/downloads.

Set ARTSONIA_INLINE_DOWNLOADS=1 to avoid writing downloaded images to disk. In that mode, the dest value is only a label and is not checked against the allowed folders.

Limitations and notes

The material does not list the individual read tools or provide a complete API inventory, so the supported capabilities should not be assumed to cover other Artsonia operations. Confirmation settings are especially important for unattended or client environments that cannot display prompts. An unrecognized MCP_CONFIRM_MODE value is treated as refuse.

MCP_CONFIRM_TTL_SECONDS defaults to 600 seconds. MCP_CONFIRM_SECRET is generated randomly for each process by default; set it only when confirmation tokens need to remain valid after a server restart.
