Overview

The Arcgis Washingtoncomn MCP server connects agents to Washington County, Minnesota open geospatial data published through ArcGIS. It lets agents search datasets, inspect Feature Service or Map Service layer schemas, and query records with filters, selected fields, ordering, limits, and offsets. Use it for parcel, address, zoning, and public works data when you need structured GIS results rather than a general web search. It runs either through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Find Washington County parcel datasets by keyword
  • Inspect ArcGIS layer fields and geometry types
  • Query zoning or public works records with filters
  • Sample feature records and return selected attributes
  • Retrieve GIS features with geometry

Key features

  • Washington County, Minnesota GIS dataset search
  • ArcGIS Feature Service and Map Service queries
  • Layer schema and capability inspection
  • SQL-like filtering and field selection
  • Pagination and result ordering
  • Local stdio and hosted HTTP access

How Arcgis Washingtoncomn works

What the Arcgis Washingtoncomn MCP server does

The Arcgis Washingtoncomn MCP server exposes Washington County, Minnesota open geospatial datasets through MCP. Its catalog covers datasets such as parcels, addresses, zoning, and public works. Agents can first search the catalog by keyword, then use the returned Feature Service URL to inspect or query a specific layer.

The integration is an independent, unofficial connection and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by Washington County or the upstream ArcGIS provider. It is distributed as part of Pipeworx.

How it works

The Arcgis Washingtoncomn MCP server can be reached in two ways. The Pipeworx endpoint uses streamable HTTP at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-washingtoncomn/mcp. A local package is also available through npx and communicates over standard input and output.

The normal workflow is:

  1. Call search_datasets with a keyword such as parcels.
  2. Select a result and copy its Feature Service url.
  3. Call layer_info to inspect fields, geometry type, record count, and capabilities.
  4. Call query_layer with the service URL and query parameters.

The gateway endpoint also lists shared Pipeworx meta-tools, so its tool list is larger than the three dataset tools. The local stdio process exposes only this pack's tools. The same gateway can alternatively be accessed through its full endpoint, where all catalog packs are listed directly.

Setup and configuration

For an MCP client that supports remote MCP connections, add the gateway URL as the server endpoint. The README specifically shows configuration examples for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf.

For a local connection, run:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-washingtoncomn": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-washingtoncomn"]
    }
  }
}

The package can also be started directly with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-washingtoncomn. HTTP clients can call tools directly through the gateway's /v1/tools/ endpoints.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets searches Washington County GIS datasets and returns names, summaries, record counts, owning organization, and service URLs.
  • query_layer queries an ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service layer. It supports SQL-like where clauses, comma-separated out_fields, order_by, limit, and offset, and returns attributes with geometry.
  • layer_info returns a layer's field names and types, geometry type, total record count, and capabilities.

To sample a layer, the documented pattern is where="1=1" with out_fields="*". The gateway's ask_pipeworx meta-tool can also route plain-language questions across the broader Pipeworx catalog, including this data pack.

Limitations and notes

The layer tools require a service URL, normally obtained from search_datasets. Gateway and local connections expose different tool lists: gateway connections include shared meta-tools, while the standalone process does not. The gateway documentation states that its scope and exact tool count can change, with the initialize response serving as the authoritative scope for a connection.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Washingtoncomn

Arcgis Washingtoncomn is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Washington County, Minnesota open geospatial data published through ArcGIS. Its main tools search datasets, inspect Feature Service or Map Service layer schemas, and query layer records with filters, selected fields, ordering, limits, offsets, attributes, and geometry.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-washingtoncomn`. This starts the standalone stdio server without a Pipeworx account. You can instead configure the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-washingtoncomn/mcp`.

Yes, the README provides a Cursor configuration using the hosted MCP endpoint. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-washingtoncomn/mcp` as the server URL, or use the local `npx` stdio configuration.

First call `search_datasets` to find a dataset and obtain its Feature Service URL. Pass that URL to `query_layer`, then provide options such as `where`, `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, and `offset`. Use `layer_info` first when you need to inspect the schema.
