We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-raleigh

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 3d ago.

Overview

Arcgis Raleigh MCP server exposes City of Raleigh open geospatial data through MCP tools for dataset discovery, layer inspection, and record queries. Search results provide ArcGIS service URLs that can be passed to the layer and query tools. It supports filtering, field selection, sorting, pagination, and geometry-bearing results. Use it when an agent needs Raleigh-specific GIS data rather than general mapping or geocoding.

Use cases

  • Find Raleigh parcel and zoning datasets by keyword
  • Inspect ArcGIS layer fields before writing a query
  • Retrieve filtered Raleigh park or transport records
  • Page through ArcGIS records with ordering and offsets

Key features

  • Searches City of Raleigh GIS datasets
  • Inspects ArcGIS layer schemas
  • Queries Feature Service and Map Service layers
  • Supports SQL-like filters and field selection
  • Returns attributes and geometry
  • Offers gateway and local stdio modes

How Arcgis Raleigh works

What Arcgis Raleigh MCP server does

The Arcgis Raleigh MCP server connects an MCP client to open geospatial data published by the City of Raleigh, North Carolina through ArcGIS. Its coverage includes datasets related to parcels, zoning, parks, transportation, and city services. The integration is an independent, unofficial connection and is not affiliated with the upstream provider.

The server is listed in the Location Services category and is suited to agents that need to find Raleigh datasets, understand their schemas, or retrieve records from ArcGIS layers. It does not provide a general-purpose map interface; its tools return dataset metadata, layer information, attributes, and geometry.

How it works

Start with search_datasets and provide a keyword. The response identifies matching datasets and includes a name, summary, record count, owner or organization, and a Feature Service URL. That URL is the handoff point for the other tools.

Use layer_info to inspect a service layer before querying it. The response describes the available fields and their types, geometry type, total records, and reported capabilities. Then use query_layer with the service URL to retrieve matching rows and geometry.

Queries can include a SQL-like where expression, a comma-separated out_fields list, order_by, limit, and offset. To sample a layer, use a condition that matches all records and request all fields, subject to the selected limit. The gateway also supports plain-language requests through ask_pipeworx, which can choose and populate tools for a question.

Setup and configuration

The Arcgis Raleigh MCP server is available through the Pipeworx gateway at:

https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-raleigh/mcp

An MCP client configuration can point to that URL under the arcgis-raleigh server name. The gateway endpoint lists the three Raleigh-specific tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools. Its initialization response is the authoritative source for the tools available at a given time.

A local stdio option is also available through the npm package @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-raleigh. Configure an MCP client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-raleigh, or execute the same command directly. The local process exposes only the pack's tools and does not add the gateway's shared meta-tools.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets: Finds City of Raleigh GIS datasets by keyword and returns service URLs plus summary metadata.
  • layer_info: Reports a layer's schema, geometry type, record total, and capabilities.
  • query_layer: Retrieves records from an ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service layer with filtering, field selection, ordering, and pagination.
  • Results from query_layer include attributes and geometry.

Limitations and notes

The Arcgis Raleigh MCP server is focused on City of Raleigh ArcGIS data. A service URL generally comes from search_datasets and must identify a compatible Feature Service or Map Service layer. The available datasets, schemas, record counts, and capabilities are determined by the upstream GIS services and may change.

The gateway pack endpoint includes shared Pipeworx tools in addition to the Raleigh tools, while the standalone stdio package limits its tool list to this integration. The gateway and local modes use the same source and Raleigh-specific tools, but only the gateway provides cross-catalog routing through ask_pipeworx.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Raleigh

Arcgis Raleigh is an MCP server that connects AI agents to City of Raleigh's ArcGIS open geospatial data. Its main tools search datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query Feature Service or Map Service layers using filters, selected fields, sorting, limits, and offsets, returning records with attributes and geometry.

Run it locally with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-raleigh` or configure an MCP client to use that command. You can also connect to the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-raleigh/mcp`. The local mode does not require a Pipeworx account.

Yes, Arcgis Raleigh works with Cursor through its MCP configuration. Add the hosted gateway URL as an MCP server, or configure Cursor to launch the npm package with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-raleigh`.

First call `search_datasets` to find a dataset and copy its Feature Service URL. Then pass that URL to `query_layer`, adding a `where` condition, selected output fields, ordering, limit, or offset as needed. Use `layer_info` first when you need to inspect the schema.
