Overview

Arcgis Mobile MCP server connects AI agents to City of Mobile, Alabama open geospatial data through ArcGIS services. It provides tools to find datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query feature or map service layers with filters, selected fields, sorting, and pagination. Use it when an agent needs parcel, zoning, public works, or city-service data from Mobile GIS. It is available as a hosted MCP endpoint or a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Find Mobile GIS parcel datasets by keyword
  • Inspect ArcGIS layer fields before querying
  • Retrieve filtered zoning records with geometry
  • Paginate public works or city-service results

Key features

  • Keyword search across Mobile GIS datasets
  • ArcGIS Feature and Map Service queries
  • Layer schema and capability inspection
  • SQL-like filtering and field selection
  • Sorting and offset-based pagination
  • Hosted HTTP and local stdio access

How Arcgis Mobile works

What Arcgis Mobile does

Arcgis Mobile MCP server exposes City of Mobile, Alabama open geospatial data through three MCP tools. The available coverage includes datasets related to parcels, zoning, public works, and city services. This makes it suitable for agents that need to discover relevant GIS sources before retrieving records from an ArcGIS service.

The server is an independent, unofficial integration and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the upstream provider. It belongs in the Location Services category for workflows that depend on municipal geospatial records.

How it works

Start with search_datasets and provide a keyword such as parcels or a term related to zoning or city services. Each result includes a dataset name, summary, record count, owner or organization, and a Feature Service URL. Pass that returned URL to the other tools rather than guessing a service endpoint.

Use layer_info to inspect a layer before querying it. The response describes the available fields and their types, geometry type, total record count, and service capabilities. Then use query_layer with the layer URL to retrieve attribute rows and geometry.

Queries support a SQL-like where expression, comma-separated out_fields, order_by, limit, and offset. To inspect a sample without narrowing the records, use where="1=1" and out_fields="*". Pagination and field selection can help keep responses focused when a layer contains many records.

Setup and configuration

Arcgis Mobile MCP server can be connected through the hosted Pipeworx endpoint:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-mobile": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-mobile/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The hosted endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to this pack's three tools. Its initialize response is the authoritative source for the tools available on a given connection. The full Pipeworx gateway is another connection option, with the same gateway URL family and access to the broader catalog.

For a local connection, run the standalone package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-mobile": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-mobile"]
    }
  }
}

The standalone process communicates over standard input and output and exposes only this pack's tools. The hosted HTTP tools can also be called directly, including a POST request to the documented tool endpoint.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets: Finds City of Mobile GIS datasets by keyword and returns metadata plus a service URL.
  • layer_info: Reports a layer's fields, field types, geometry type, record count, and capabilities.
  • query_layer: Retrieves matching ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service records, including geometry, with filtering, field selection, sorting, and pagination.

Limitations and notes

The tools target City of Mobile GIS data rather than general ArcGIS discovery. A typical workflow is therefore dataset search, layer inspection, and then record querying. The hosted pack endpoint includes shared gateway tools that are not part of the standalone package, so the tool list differs by connection method.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Mobile

Arcgis Mobile is an MCP server that connects AI agents to City of Mobile, Alabama open GIS data through ArcGIS Feature and Map Services. Its main tools search datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query layers for filtered records, selected fields, sorting, pagination, and returned geometry.

Run it locally with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-mobile` and configure the command in an MCP client. You can instead connect to the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-mobile/mcp`.

Yes, Arcgis Mobile works with Cursor through the hosted MCP endpoint. Add the endpoint URL to Cursor's MCP configuration; the README also names Claude Desktop and Windsurf as supported connection targets.

Search for a dataset first, then pass its returned Feature Service URL to `layer_info` or `query_layer`. Use `where`, `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, and `offset` to control the returned records.
