Overview

Arcgis Cumberland MCP server connects AI agents to Cumberland County, North Carolina’s open ArcGIS geospatial data. It provides tools to find datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query Feature Service or Map Service layers with filters, selected fields, ordering, and pagination. Use it when an agent needs structured access to local parcels, addresses, zoning, or public works data. The service is available through a hosted MCP endpoint or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Search Cumberland County GIS datasets by topic
  • Inspect ArcGIS layer fields and geometry types
  • Query parcel or address records with filters
  • Sample a layer before selecting output fields

Key features

  • Keyword search across Cumberland County GIS datasets
  • ArcGIS Feature Service and Map Service queries
  • Layer schema and capability inspection
  • SQL-like filtering and field selection
  • Result ordering and pagination
  • Hosted HTTP and local stdio access

How Arcgis Cumberland works

What Arcgis Cumberland MCP server does

Arcgis Cumberland MCP server exposes Cumberland County, North Carolina open geospatial data from ArcGIS to MCP-compatible clients. The available datasets include categories such as parcels, addresses, zoning, and public works. Agents can search the catalog first, then use the returned Feature Service URL to inspect or retrieve records from a specific layer.

This is an independent, unofficial integration. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by Cumberland County or the upstream ArcGIS provider. The project is part of the Pipeworx gateway, but the package can also run locally without a gateway account.

How it works

The hosted connection uses the streamable HTTP endpoint https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-cumberland/mcp. A client can call the pack’s tools through MCP, while the endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools such as discovery and routing functions. The exact tool scope is reported during initialize; the gateway’s listing can include more tools than the three ArcGIS-specific tools described here.

A local installation communicates over stdin and stdout and exposes only this pack’s tools. Both modes use the same underlying source and capabilities. The gateway also offers a broader endpoint, https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp, where tools from all available Pipeworx data packs can be accessed directly or through gateway routing.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted setup, add the pack endpoint as an MCP server in a compatible client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-cumberland": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-cumberland/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio use, configure the package through npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-cumberland": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-cumberland"]
    }
  }
}

The package can also be started directly with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-cumberland. HTTP clients without MCP support can call individual tools through the Pipeworx REST endpoint.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets searches Cumberland County GIS datasets by keyword. Results include the dataset name, summary, record count, owner or organization, and a service URL for follow-up calls.
  • layer_info examines a Feature Service or Map Service layer. It returns field names and types, geometry type, total records, and declared capabilities.
  • query_layer retrieves layer records using a service URL. It supports SQL-like where conditions, comma-separated out_fields, order_by, limit, and offset, and returns attributes with geometry. A where value of 1=1 and out_fields of * can be used to sample a layer.

A typical workflow is to search for a subject, pass the resulting URL to layer_info to understand its schema, and then use query_layer with only the needed fields and filters.

Limitations and notes

Arcgis Cumberland MCP server is focused on the datasets and ArcGIS layers made available by Cumberland County GIS. The documented tools do not describe write, update, or delete operations; the listed query capability is for retrieving layer information and records. Hosted pack connections include shared gateway meta-tools, while local stdio connections do not. The project is licensed under MIT.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Cumberland

Arcgis Cumberland is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Cumberland County, North Carolina’s open ArcGIS geospatial data. Its main tools search datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query Feature Service or Map Service layers with filters, selected fields, ordering, and pagination, returning attributes and geometry.

Install it locally by configuring an MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-cumberland`. The package communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require the hosted gateway. You can also configure the hosted MCP URL instead of running the package locally.

Search for a dataset with `search_datasets`, then pass its returned service URL to `layer_info` or `query_layer`. Use `where`, `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, and `offset` to control the records and fields returned.

Add the hosted endpoint `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-cumberland/mcp` to the client, or configure the local `npx` command for a stdio connection.
