Overview

Arcgis Coquitlam connects AI agents to the City of Coquitlam’s open GIS data in British Columbia through ArcGIS services. Agents can find datasets, inspect Feature Service or Map Service layer schemas, and query records with filters, selected fields, sorting, pagination, and geometry. Use it for local parcels, zoning, parks, and city-service data when the relevant dataset is available in Coquitlam’s GIS catalog. It can run through the Pipeworx gateway over streamable HTTP or locally as a standard stdio MCP server.

Use cases

  • Find Coquitlam parcel datasets by keyword
  • Inspect zoning layer fields before querying
  • Filter parks or city-service records by attribute
  • Retrieve paginated ArcGIS features with geometry

Key features

  • Coquitlam open GIS dataset search
  • ArcGIS Feature and Map Service queries
  • Layer schema and capability inspection
  • Attribute filtering and field selection
  • Sorting and offset-based pagination
  • Local stdio and hosted HTTP access

How Arcgis Coquitlam works

What Arcgis Coquitlam does

Arcgis Coquitlam exposes selected City of Coquitlam open geospatial data to MCP-compatible clients. Its catalog covers subjects such as parcels, zoning, parks, and city services. The server is intended for agents that need to discover a relevant dataset and then work with the associated ArcGIS service rather than browse GIS pages manually.

The server is an independent, unofficial integration and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the City of Coquitlam or another upstream provider. Results come from the ArcGIS services referenced by the dataset catalog, so the usefulness of a query depends on the available public data and the service’s own contents.

How it works

A typical workflow starts with search_datasets, using a keyword such as parcels or zoning. Each result can include the dataset name, description, record count, owning organization, and a Feature Service URL. Pass that URL to either of the layer-oriented tools.

layer_info reveals the layer structure before querying it. It returns field names and types, geometry type, total records, and advertised capabilities. This is useful for identifying valid columns and understanding the shape of the returned data.

query_layer accepts an ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service layer URL. Its parameters support SQL-like where conditions, a comma-separated field list, ordering, a result limit, and an offset. Responses contain attribute rows and geometry. To inspect a small sample, use a condition such as 1=1, request the fields with *, and apply a limit.

The hosted MCP endpoint is https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-coquitlam/mcp. A gateway connection also exposes shared Pipeworx tools, including routing and discovery tools, while the local package exposes only the Arcgis Coquitlam tools. The gateway can route broader questions through ask_pipeworx.

Setup and configuration

For a remote connection, add the gateway URL to an MCP client that supports streamable HTTP:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-coquitlam": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-coquitlam/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The package also supports local stdio execution with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-coquitlam": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-coquitlam"]
    }
  }
}

Run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-coquitlam directly to start the local process. The standalone mode communicates over standard input and output and does not require a Pipeworx account. The gateway also offers HTTP tool calls under its /v1/tools/ endpoint, which can be used without an MCP client for direct requests.

Tools and capabilities

  • Search Coquitlam GIS datasets by keyword.
  • Retrieve dataset metadata and the service URL needed for follow-up calls.
  • Inspect ArcGIS layer fields, geometry, record totals, and capabilities.
  • Filter layer records with SQL-like conditions.
  • Select fields, sort results, paginate with limits and offsets, and receive geometry.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Coquitlam

Arcgis Coquitlam is an MCP server that connects AI agents to the City of Coquitlam’s open ArcGIS geospatial data. Its main tools search datasets, inspect Feature Service and Map Service layer schemas, and query layer records with filters, selected fields, pagination, sorting, and geometry. It supports gateway HTTP and local stdio connections.

Install it by adding an `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-coquitlam` stdio configuration to your MCP client. You can also connect directly to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-coquitlam/mcp` over streamable HTTP, or run the npx command directly to start the local server.

Call `search_datasets` with a keyword such as `parcels`, `zoning`, or `parks`. The response can include each dataset’s name, summary, record count, owner or organization, and Feature Service URL. Pass that URL to `query_layer` or `layer_info` for further work.

Call `query_layer` with the service layer URL and optional `where`, `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, and `offset` values. Use `where="1=1"` with `out_fields="*"` to sample a layer. Results include attributes and geometry.

Yes, Arcgis Coquitlam works with Cursor through the hosted MCP URL or its local stdio configuration. Add the gateway endpoint as an MCP server, or configure Cursor to launch `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-coquitlam`.
