Overview

Arcgis Aurora MCP server connects AI clients to City of Aurora, Colorado open geospatial data published through ArcGIS. It provides tools to search datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query Feature Service or Map Service layers with filters, selected fields, sorting, and pagination. Use it when an agent needs Aurora data such as parcels, zoning, public works, or city services. The server is available through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Search Aurora parcel and zoning datasets
  • Inspect an ArcGIS layer schema before querying it
  • Query public works records with filters and pagination
  • Retrieve feature attributes and geometry from Aurora GIS layers

Key features

  • Keyword search across Aurora open GIS datasets
  • ArcGIS Feature Service and Map Service queries
  • SQL-like filtering and field selection
  • Ordering, limits, and offsets for result control
  • Layer schema and capability inspection
  • Local stdio and hosted gateway access

How Arcgis Aurora works

What Arcgis Aurora MCP server does

Arcgis Aurora MCP server gives MCP-compatible clients access to City of Aurora, Colorado GIS datasets. Its dataset search covers open geospatial data such as parcels, zoning, public works, and city services. Search results include a dataset name, description, record count, owner or organization, and the ArcGIS Feature Service URL needed for follow-up operations.

The server supports two kinds of layer inspection. layer_info describes a Feature Service or Map Service layer, including its fields, field types, geometry type, record count, and stated capabilities. query_layer retrieves layer data, including attribute rows and geometry, from a URL returned by dataset search.

How it works

A typical workflow starts with search_datasets, using a keyword such as parcels or zoning. The client then passes the returned service URL to layer_info to understand the schema or to query_layer to retrieve records.

Queries accept a SQL-like where expression, comma-separated out_fields, order_by, limit, and offset. To sample a layer, use where="1=1" with out_fields="*". Pagination and ordering can help agents retrieve a controlled subset of records rather than requesting an entire layer at once.

Setup and configuration

Arcgis Aurora MCP server can be connected through the Pipeworx pack endpoint:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-aurora": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-aurora/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The README names Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf as compatible clients. The gateway endpoint lists the three Aurora tools plus shared Pipeworx meta-tools, including routing and discovery functions. The exact tool scope is reported by the connection's initialize response. A full Pipeworx gateway URL is also available when an installation needs direct access to all catalog packs.

For a local installation, run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-aurora as an MCP stdio server. This mode requires no Pipeworx account and exposes only the pack's own tools.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets: Finds Aurora GIS datasets by keyword and returns metadata plus a service URL.
  • query_layer: Retrieves filtered records and geometry from an ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service layer.
  • layer_info: Returns schema, geometry, record-count, and capability details for a layer.
  • Gateway access: Supports plain-language routing through ask_pipeworx when connected through Pipeworx.

Limitations and notes

The layer tools require a service URL, normally obtained from search_datasets. The available data is limited to City of Aurora open geospatial sources described by the connected ArcGIS services. Gateway connections include shared meta-tool schemas in addition to the pack tools, while local stdio connections do not. The gateway and local modes use the same underlying pack tools, but only the gateway provides Pipeworx-wide routing.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Aurora

Arcgis Aurora is an MCP server that connects AI clients to City of Aurora, Colorado's ArcGIS open geospatial data. Its main tools search datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query Feature Service or Map Service layers with filters, selected fields, ordering, and pagination. It returns records, geometry, and metadata.

Install it locally by running `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-aurora` as an MCP stdio server.

Yes, Cursor is named as a supported client in the setup instructions. Add the Pipeworx MCP URL to Cursor's MCP server configuration, or use the local `npx` stdio command instead.

First call `search_datasets` to find a dataset and obtain its Feature Service URL, then pass that URL to `query_layer`. Use `where`, `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, and `offset` to control the returned records; `where="1=1"` and `out_fields="*"` can sample a layer.
