How AllNewsAPI works

What AllNewsAPI MCP server does

The AllNewsAPI MCP server gives MCP-compatible clients access to AllNewsAPI news data. It covers both current and historical articles, as well as top headlines from global sources. Agents can search by keyword, restrict results to a date range, request article content, and apply filters for language, country, region, category, publisher, or sorting.

The server also supports AI-analyzed filtering. Searches and headline requests can be narrowed by overall sentiment or by a named entity and entity type. Returned articles may include sentiment scores, detected entities, and a short AI-generated summary when those fields are available.

How it works

The server exposes three MCP tools:

  • search-news finds articles using a query and optional dates, filters, pagination, result count, keyword-matching attributes, and sort order.
  • headlines returns top headlines with optional country, category, language, sentiment, and entity filters.
  • usage reports the current plan, request limits, and remaining quota without requiring parameters.

Both article search and headline retrieval support up to 100 results per request, with a default of five. Search results can be ordered by publication time or relevance. Accepted country, language, category, and region values are defined in the AllNewsAPI documentation.

Setup and configuration

The AllNewsAPI MCP server can be used as a hosted remote server or launched locally. For hosted access, configure an MCP client with https://mcp.allnewsapi.com/mcp and provide the API key in the X-API-Key header. A query-string key is also supported, and bearer authentication is available as a fallback for clients that require it.

For a local setup, run npx allnewsapi-mcp@latest --apikey YOUR_API_KEY_HERE. The key can instead be supplied through the ALLNEWSAPI_KEY environment variable. This approach does not require cloning the repository or building the package. An API key is available from AllNewsAPI.

The server documentation includes setup paths for Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, OpenWork, and other MCP clients.

Tools and capabilities

search-news accepts q, startDate, endDate, content, lang, country, region, category, max, page, attributes, sortby, publisher, ai_sentiment, ai_entity_name, and ai_entity_type. headlines accepts country, category, language, result count, sentiment, and entity filters. These options support workflows such as monitoring a company, finding regional coverage, or reviewing news from a defined period.

Limitations and notes

Advanced search filters including country, region, category, publisher, language, matching attributes, and sort order require a paid plan. Free-plan searches are limited to using q and max for the documented use case. API requests consume the account quota, which can be checked with usage. The project is licensed under MIT.

The AllNewsAPI MCP server does not describe a separate local database or article archive; it provides access through the AllNewsAPI service. Results and optional AI fields depend on the upstream API response and plan capabilities.
