What Alabama Code does
The Alabama Code MCP server exposes Alabama state statute data through two tools: al_statute for citation-based lookup and al_search for keyword-oriented full-text search. The source is the Code of Alabama 1975 as published by the Alabama Legislature's ALISON service. This places the package in the Legal category and makes it suitable for research that needs the current text of a section rather than a secondary summary.
al_statute accepts citations such as 13A-6-2 and returns the section's current text and title. It can also provide the Legislature's amendment-history citation string, whether the section has been repealed or transferred, and the previous and next section citations. When an enacted amendment has a future effective date, the response may include the future text and date as pending_version.
How it works
Both tools call the Alabama Legislature's public GraphQL API at alison.legislature.state.al.us/graphql on demand. The server does not ship with a local statute index or rely on content embedded in the website's client-rendered HTML. Search uses the Legislature's full-text index against section body content, so a term can match provisions whose titles do not contain that term.
The API's search response includes the total number of matches independently of the requested result limit. Search remains keyword-shaped: the provided material does not describe phrase or Boolean query support. The server checks GraphQL response bodies for an errors array, including when the endpoint returns HTTP 200 for a query-level error.
Setup and configuration
The Alabama Code MCP server is keyless and requires no environment variables or account for the standalone package. A local MCP client can launch it with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-alabama-code; it communicates over standard input and output and exposes only this pack's tools.
A remote MCP connection is also available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/alabama-code/mcp. The gateway endpoint adds shared Pipeworx tools, including routing and discovery tools, so its tool list is larger than the two Alabama-specific tools. The full gateway can be used instead at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp. Direct HTTP tool calls are available through the gateway's /v1/tools/al_statute endpoint.
Tools and capabilities
al_statute(citation): Gets one current section by citation, with title, text, amendment history, disposition, neighboring citations, and any available future-effective version.
al_search(query, limit?): Searches live Alabama section body text and returns matching results with a total match count.
- Amendment history: Surfaces the Legislature's own Acts citation list, with HTML entities decoded.
- Future amendments: Reports an enacted but not-yet-effective version when the source provides one.
Limitations and notes
The Alabama Code MCP server does not provide a per-year historical archive or a way to retrieve the text as it existed before an amendment. ALISON publishes the current in-force version and may additionally publish a future version; that future record is not a historical snapshot.
Search is a live query against the Legislature's backend, not an offline legal database. It searches section body content but is not documented as a phrase or Boolean language. The integration is independent and unofficial, and the material does not state that it is affiliated with or endorsed by the Alabama Legislature.
