Overview

agent-plugin connects agent clients to ChatCut for conversational video editing on macOS or Windows desktops, or through ChatCut's hosted MCP endpoint. It can import media, modify timelines, transcribe audio, add captions, generate voiceovers and music, create motion graphics, export videos, and return editable projects. Reach for it when an agent needs to turn existing footage into a finished or further editable video. A ChatCut account and access to a project are required.

How Agent Plugin works

What agent-plugin does

agent-plugin connects supported AI agent clients to ChatCut, an AI video editor for working with your own footage. Requests can cover practical editing tasks such as tightening a talking-head recording, adding captions or subtitles, removing silence and filler words, creating motion graphics, generating voiceovers or background music, and exporting a video or editable timeline.

The repository contains host-specific packages for Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Grok Bot, Google Antigravity, Gemini CLI, Kimi Work, WorkBuddy, Doubao Work, and Qwen Work. It also includes a ChatGPT/Codex-oriented package for installing and connecting the ChatCut Desktop application.

How it works

The recommended arrangement uses ChatCut Desktop on a supported graphical macOS or Windows computer. The desktop application owns a local chatcut_desktop MCP server, while the agent sends editing requests through its MCP connection. ChatCut imports source media, changes the project timeline, creates or generates assets, transcribes audio, applies captions, exports results, and checks that edits appear in the editor.

A hosted option is available at https://api.chatcut.io/api/external-mcp/mcp. Agents authenticate this connection through their host's MCP login or plugin authorization flow. Desktop projects and hosted Web projects remain separate, and connecting Desktop to an agent can replace a conflicting hosted connection.

For video recreation workflows, ChatCut Desktop includes a video-gen Skill and the submit_video_remake operation. Recreation requests use the current account's access and require approval before credits are spent.

Setup and configuration

A ChatCut account and an accessible ChatCut project are needed. The Desktop installation supports macOS 13 or newer on Apple Silicon or Intel, and Windows 10 or newer on x64. The official installers do not require Node.js or npm. Linux and remote agents without access to a supported graphical computer cannot install Desktop there.

Install Desktop with the official shell installer on macOS or the PowerShell installer on Windows, or ask a supported local agent to read the ChatCut Desktop setup guide and perform the connection. ChatGPT and Codex desktop users can also install ChatCut from the Plugins sidebar.

Hosted installations use the client-specific plugin or extension commands. Claude Code requires version 2.1.210 or newer for claude mcp login; Codex uses its bundled CLI; Gemini CLI installs the repository as an extension. Other supported hosts use their own plugin or authorization screens.

Tools and capabilities

  • Import media into a ChatCut project.
  • Edit and export project timelines.
  • Transcribe audio and add captions or subtitles.
  • Remove silences and filler words from recordings.
  • Create motion graphics and other generated assets.
  • Generate videos, voiceovers, and music.
  • Verify that edits are visible in the editor.
  • Recreate reference videos through the Desktop video-gen Skill.

Limitations and notes

The Desktop workflow requires a graphical macOS or Windows computer. Web and Desktop projects are not automatically migrated between one another. Account access controls credit-based video recreation requests, and those requests require approval before spending credits. Host-specific packages and installation steps differ, so the appropriate package must be selected for the agent in use.
