What adobe-mcp does
The adobe-mcp MCP server connects AI agents with Adobe creative applications through separate application packages or one combined suite package. Supported applications are InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Pro. The repository also contains a shared core package used by the application servers.
The available scope depends on the package selected. InDesign covers documents, pages, text, styles, tables, books, and PDF or EPUB export. Illustrator includes artwork, artboards, layers, paths, typography, colour, effects, images, variables, actions, export, and prepress. Photoshop covers documents, image and canvas operations, layers, masks, selections, adjustments, filters, painting, type, video timelines, batch actions, and export. After Effects provides project, composition, layer, keyframe, effect, text animation, mask, 3D, tracking, and rendering operations. Premiere Pro exposes project, bin, sequence, timeline, marker, effect, transcript, metadata, and export tools.
How it works
Each server runs on the same machine as the Adobe application it controls and uses the application's scripting interface. Most packages communicate through ExtendScript. Premiere Pro is different: its package communicates with a UXP plugin because the application does not provide an external scripting route.
The suite combines all five application tool sets and adds cross-application operations, including moving Illustrator artwork into InDesign layouts and sharing swatches with exact values. Suite tools use application prefixes such as indesign_ and illustrator_ to distinguish operations.
Setup and configuration
The adobe-mcp MCP server supports macOS and Windows. Install a package with npx, then register its command in an MCP client. For example, Claude Code can use claude mcp add indesign -- npx -y adobe-mcp-indesign. Clients that accept an mcpServers configuration can define the command as npx with -y and the package name as arguments.
To install the combined suite in Claude Code, use claude mcp add adobe -- npx -y adobe-mcp-suite. The suite can be limited to selected applications with the --apps option or the ADOBE_MCP_APPS environment variable. The relevant Adobe application must be installed on the machine where the server runs.
Tools and capabilities
The repository lists these tool counts by package:
- InDesign: 423 tools
- Illustrator: 308 tools
- Photoshop: 205 tools
- After Effects: 164 tools
- Premiere Pro: 96 tools
The individual packages are useful when an agent only needs one Adobe application. The suite is intended for workflows spanning multiple applications or requiring cross-application operations. Shared infrastructure handles script escaping, script execution, result handling, path checks, and static script auditing.
Limitations and notes
Premiere Pro support is provided through a UXP plugin and is marked as not yet tested against Premiere Pro in the repository listing. The servers are local rather than remote services, so Adobe software and the relevant package need to run on the same supported operating system. Package-specific READMEs contain the detailed tool conventions and configuration information.
The InDesign package was previously published as indesign-mcp-server through version 2.3.0. New client configurations should use adobe-mcp-indesign instead. The repository and its packages are licensed under MIT.
