Overview

The 7timer MCP server exposes keyless forecasts from 7Timer! through MCP tools for general weather and astronomy observing. It provides three-hour forecast points for up to 72 hours, including cloud cover, temperature, wind, precipitation, seeing, and sky transparency. Use it when an agent needs to assess local weather or decide whether conditions are suitable for stargazing or astrophotography. It can run through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Check weather conditions for a specified location
  • Assess whether tonight is suitable for stargazing
  • Find the clearest and steadiest observing window
  • Retrieve short-term cloud, wind, and precipitation forecasts

Key features

  • Keyless 7Timer! CIVIL weather forecasts
  • 7Timer! ASTRO observing forecasts
  • Three-hour intervals for up to 72 hours
  • Astronomy metrics for seeing and sky transparency
  • Local stdio and remote MCP deployment
  • Gateway HTTP tool access

How 7timer works

What the 7timer MCP server does

The 7timer MCP server connects agents to forecast data from 7Timer!, exposing separate tools for everyday weather and astronomy observing. Both tools are keyless and return forecast information at three-hour intervals across a 72-hour period.

weather_forecast uses 7Timer! CIVIL data. Its results include temperature, humidity, a condition code such as clearday, pcloudynight, lightrainday, or tsday, cloud cover, wind, and precipitation type.

stargazing_forecast uses 7Timer! ASTRO data for observing decisions. It reports cloud cover, atmospheric seeing, and sky transparency. Each forecast point includes a readable description and an observing_quality verdict, while a best_window summary identifies the clearest and steadiest hours.

How it works

The package supports two connection modes. A remote MCP client can connect to the Pipeworx endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/7timer/mcp. That endpoint exposes the two 7Timer tools alongside shared Pipeworx meta-tools, including routing and discovery functions. The gateway also provides access to the broader Pipeworx catalog through those shared tools.

For a focused local connection, run the package with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-7timer. The local process communicates over standard input and output and exposes only the pack's own tools. It does not add the gateway's shared meta-tools or require a Pipeworx account.

The tools can also be called over HTTP without an MCP client. For example, the gateway provides /v1/tools/stargazing_forecast for direct POST requests with JSON input. Tool details can be inspected through the gateway's tool inspection endpoint.

Setup and configuration

For a remote setup, add the gateway URL as an MCP server in a compatible client. For local stdio operation, configure the client to launch npx with -y @pipeworx/mcp-7timer as its argument.

No API key or environment variable is documented for either forecast tool. The gateway README states that no account is needed for the first calls, while the local package runs without a Pipeworx account.

Tools and capabilities

  • weather_forecast: Retrieves 7Timer! CIVIL weather data for a location.
  • stargazing_forecast: Retrieves 7Timer! ASTRO observing conditions for a location.
  • Three-hour forecast resolution out to 72 hours.
  • Astronomy-specific measures for cloud cover, seeing, and transparency.
  • Direct MCP, local stdio, and gateway HTTP access paths.

Limitations and notes

Forecast results come from 7Timer! and are limited to the fields and time range supplied by its CIVIL and ASTRO services.

A gateway connection lists more tools than the two forecast tools because shared Pipeworx meta-tools are included. The local 7timer MCP server exposes only the pack-specific tools. Use the local mode when a narrow tool surface and no gateway round trip are preferred; use the gateway when Pipeworx routing or access to other catalog sources is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions about 7timer

7timer is an MCP server that connects AI agents to 7Timer! ASTRO and CIVIL forecast services. Its main tools are stargazing_forecast for cloud cover, seeing, transparency, and observing quality, and weather_forecast for temperature, humidity, conditions, wind, and precipitation.

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-7timer` for local stdio operation. Add that command and argument to your MCP client's server configuration. This mode does not require a Pipeworx account and exposes the pack's two forecast tools.

Yes, 7timer works with Cursor through the Pipeworx MCP endpoint. Configure the server URL as `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/7timer/mcp`. The same endpoint also includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the forecast tools.

No, the documented forecast tools are keyless. The gateway states that no account is needed for the first calls, and the standalone package runs without a Pipeworx account.

Call `stargazing_forecast` with a location to retrieve 7Timer! ASTRO data. Results cover three-hour intervals out to 72 hours and include cloud cover, seeing, transparency, an observing-quality verdict, and a best-window summary.
