How 10ML Fragrance Index works

What 10ML Fragrance Index MCP server does

10ML Fragrance Index MCP server gives an MCP client access to 10ML’s curated perfume database and editorial content. The index covers more than 5,400 designer, niche and Middle-Eastern fragrances, 249 houses, 285 explained notes and 164 guides in ten languages. Coverage varies: 481 perfumes have full editorial profiles, while other entries provide core information such as notes, accords and a character description.

The service is read-only and intended for research, discovery and recommendation workflows. It can return perfume facts, compare named fragrances, find similar scents, identify alternatives from other houses, explain perfume terminology and point users to relevant 10ML pages.

How it works

The hosted service uses the Streamable HTTP endpoint https://mcp.10ml.com/mcp. No sign-in or authentication is required. Requests can use a locale from the supported language set so labels and 10ML links match the selected locale. Tools also accept a response format of concise or detailed where applicable.

Search and discovery tools distinguish between different intents. Use search_perfumes for filters or natural-language descriptions, get_perfume for one known fragrance, and compare_perfumes for two to four named fragrances. Similarity, editorial alternatives and taste-based recommendations are separate operations, allowing an agent to choose between “smells like,” “dupe of,” and “I like these notes” requests.

Results are structured with an output schema and also include a short text summary. List-style results support pagination with limit and cursor. The package also exposes prompts and MCP resources for fragrance families, terminology, notes, houses and individual perfume records.

Setup and configuration

Clients that accept a remote MCP URL can connect directly to https://mcp.10ml.com/mcp; there is no local installation step. For clients that launch a process over stdio, use Node.js 18+ with npx -y @10ml/perfume-finder-mcp, or Python 3.10+ with uvx perfume-finder-mcp.

The repository documents configurations for Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, Zed, Claude Code, VS Code and Gemini CLI. Claude Code can add the HTTP endpoint with claude mcp add --transport http. VS Code uses an HTTP server entry, while Gemini CLI can install the GitHub extension. The same endpoint is also available through the documented REST API for agents that do not use MCP.

Tools and capabilities

The 15 read-only tools cover:

  • Searching by perfume name, house, notes, accords, family, audience, season, occasion or style.
  • Retrieving full perfume and house profiles, including note pyramids, launch data, longevity, projection and perfumers where available.
  • Comparing fragrances and finding similar scents with optional steering such as fresher, sweeter, darker, lighter, longer-lasting or more projection.
  • Finding editor-selected alternatives, recommendations based on preferences, occasion picks and gift ideas.
  • Exploring perfumes by note, explaining notes and perfume vocabulary, and suggesting layering combinations.
  • Finding 10ML guides and links for further reading or citation.

Limitations and notes

The 10ML Fragrance Index MCP server does not provide write operations, account access or authentication. Similarity and alternative results are different: the former matches shared notes, accords and style, while the latter focuses on alternatives from other houses and includes an editorial guide when available. Unknown perfume names return closest matches through get_perfume.

The iconic option on search_perfumes limits results to classics selected by 10ML’s editors. Older iconic_perfumes and trending_perfumes names remain aliases for existing integrations, but are not listed tools. Layering results marked as suggested should be tested on skin; editorial pairings are identified separately.
