## Description
Create, inspect and extract zip archives from chat: glob a directory into a zip, list what is inside with a bomb and traversal check, extract safely, read one text entry without unpacking. No network.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **zip_create** — Pack files, or a directory tree with glob patterns, into a new .zip
- **zip_list** — Every entry with its size, compressed size and ratio, and everything dangerous in it, flagged
- **zip_extract** — Unpack into a directory, with traversal, symlink and zip-bomb guards and a `dry_run
- **zip_add** — Add files to an archive that already exists
- **zip_extract_text** — Read one text entry inline, without unpacking anything
- **zip_bundle_month** — One month of invoices, quotes and exports from the sibling servers, in one file
- **zip_history** — What you have created, and how much of this month's free allowance is left

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "zip": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@theluckystrike/mcp-zip"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What the zip MCP server does

The zip MCP server gives an MCP client tools for common ZIP workflows: creating an archive, listing its entries, adding files, extracting contents, and reading one text entry without unpacking the archive. It can also bundle a month of invoices, quotes, and exports from related sibling servers, then report archive history and the remaining allowance.

Archive inspection includes each entry's uncompressed size, compressed size, and compression ratio. The listing identifies risky content such as absolute paths, parent-directory traversal, symlinks, and duplicate names. This makes it possible to inspect an archive before extraction rather than blindly opening it.

## How it works

The server reads ZIP central-directory metadata before inflating entries. Extraction applies checks for path traversal, symlinks, and unusually high expansion ratios, and supports a dry-run mode. A total uncompressed-size ceiling also helps reject archives whose declared contents are too large. These checks are intended to identify dangerous archives before their contents are written.

Creation uses glob patterns to select files from a directory tree, such as CSV files while excluding a dependency directory. Existing archives can receive additional files. The zip MCP server builds archives in memory and therefore rejects inputs above 512 MB. ZIP64 archives, including those exceeding 4 GB or 65,535 entries, are not supported.

Reading operations are not metered. The free tier limits archive-writing operations to 20 archives per calendar month, 25 MB per archive, and 200 entries per archive; Pro removes those writing limits. The supplied material states that the safety guards remain available on both tiers.

## Setup and configuration

A hosted deployment is available at `https://mcp.zovo.one/mcp/zip` over streamable HTTP. It requires a bearer token from the listed connect or token endpoint. Clients that cannot set headers can place the token in the URL path instead. The unauthenticated endpoint returns 401 for tool calls.

For local use, download the `zip.mcpb` bundle for Claude Desktop, or clone the repository and run `npm install && npm run build`. Configure an MCP client to launch `node` with the absolute path to `dist/index.js`. The package is not currently published on npm, so an `npx -y @theluckystrike/mcp-zip` installation is not a working path according to the README.

## Tools and capabilities

- `zip_create`: create an archive from files or glob-selected directory content.
- `zip_list`: inspect entries, sizes, ratios, and flagged hazards.
- `zip_extract`: extract with safety checks and optional dry-run behavior.
- `zip_add`: append files to an existing archive.
- `zip_extract_text`: read one text entry inline without extraction.
- `zip_bundle_month`: combine a month's invoices, quotes, and exports.
- `zip_history`: show created archives and the current monthly allowance.
- `license_status` and `license_activate`: inspect or activate a license.

The zip MCP server is compatible with Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Local operation does not require an account, API key, upload, or network call.

## Limitations and notes

ZIP creation is memory-backed rather than streamed, with a 512 MB input ceiling. ZIP64 is refused rather than interpreted. Compression results vary by content: already-compressed formats such as PDF and DOCX may shrink little, while repetitive text can shrink substantially. The hosted option requires a token, while the local source or bundle follows the local installation path described above.
