## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "anilist-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","anilist-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "ANILIST_TOKEN": "",
      "PORT": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `ANILIST_TOKEN`, `PORT` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What yuna0x0/anilist-mcp MCP server does

yuna0x0/anilist-mcp MCP server exposes AniList data and account operations through MCP tools. It is suited to assistants that need structured information about anime and manga, including detailed media records, searches, studios, characters, staff, recommendations, genres, tags, and recent site statistics.

The server also covers AniList activity and list workflows. Read operations can retrieve a user's anime or manga list, fetch activities, inspect recommendations, and look up people or studios. Authenticated operations can add, update, or remove list entries; favourite anime, manga, characters, staff, or studios; and create, update, or delete activity posts.

## How it works

MCP clients invoke the exposed tools, which query or mutate the AniList API. Search tools accept query terms and, for anime, filters. Detail tools use AniList IDs or, where supported, names. Recommendation tools can retrieve a recommendation by ID or find recommendations associated with a specific media item.

The server supports two transport modes. STDIO is configured as a local command launched by an MCP client. HTTP can be started for a deployed instance and listens on port 8081 by default. The repository also documents deployment to Node.js-compatible cloud platforms and Smithery.

Operations marked as requiring login use the token for the authorized AniList account. Public lookups do not require that token, so the server can be used without account credentials when only read access is needed.

## Setup and configuration

Install and run yuna0x0/anilist-mcp MCP server with Node.js 18 or newer. For a local STDIO setup, configure the MCP client to run `npx -y anilist-mcp`. Add `ANILIST_TOKEN` to the client environment only when authenticated operations are needed. The token is optional for public queries.

For HTTP deployment, the documented start command is `pnpm run start:http`, with `PORT` available to change the listening port. An HTTP client can provide an optional `Anilist-Token` header. If both the header and the server environment contain tokens, the header takes precedence.

The repository documents obtaining a token through AniList's developer settings and OAuth authorization flow. Keep tokens out of source control. A hosted HTTP endpoint with a preconfigured token should be protected with authentication, because callers could otherwise use the server with that token.

## Tools and capabilities

Available capabilities include:

- Search anime, activities, characters, and related AniList records.
- Retrieve anime, manga, character, staff, studio, activity, and recommendation details.
- Read user anime and manga lists and fetch user activity.
- Manage list entries and favourites for authenticated users.
- Create, update, or delete authenticated-user activity posts.
- Read genres, media tags, site statistics, and today's character or staff birthdays.

## Limitations and notes

The yuna0x0/anilist-mcp MCP server depends on AniList data and authentication behavior. Tools requiring login need a valid AniList API token and act on the authorized account. The documented tool set does not make authenticated actions available without that credential.

HTTP hosting introduces an additional credential-handling concern: a server-side token can be used by anyone who can reach an unprotected endpoint. Use an access-control layer before exposing such a deployment. The project includes MCP Inspector instructions for testing tools and responses before connecting a client.
