## What You.com Web Access & AI does

You.com Web Access & AI exposes hosted You.com capabilities to MCP-compatible clients. The available tools cover web search, page content retrieval, account balance checks, discovery, finance, and research. Tool availability depends on the endpoint configuration: the default hosted endpoint provides `you-search`, `you-contents`, `you-balance`, and `you-discover`, while `you-finance` and `you-research` can be requested explicitly.

The package is a transport bridge, not a local implementation of the You.com APIs. It does not register tool handlers or include REST request logic. Instead, it forwards MCP traffic from a local STDIO process to `https://api.you.com/mcp`.

## How it works

Run the package with `npx @youdotcom-oss/mcp` and configure the resulting process in an MCP client. The bridge sends requests to the hosted You.com MCP server. Clients that support remote MCP can skip the local process and connect directly to the streamable HTTP endpoint.

Authenticated requests use a You.com API key as a Bearer token. A keyless free profile is also available. The `free` profile changes the remote URL to include `profile=free` and exposes `you-search` and `you-discover`; it takes precedence over custom tool selection.

## Setup and configuration

Install the package with `npx @youdotcom-oss/mcp`, or add it to a project with `bun add @youdotcom-oss/mcp`. For a free configuration, set `YDC_PROFILE` to `free` in the MCP client environment. For authenticated access, set `YDC_API_KEY` to the key issued through You.com.

`YDC_ALLOWED_TOOLS` accepts a comma-separated list of hosted tool IDs when a scoped tool set is needed. Examples include selecting only `you-finance`, or combining `you-search` with `you-finance`. `YDC_PROFILE` overrides this setting when both are present.

Remote-capable clients can use `https://api.you.com/mcp?profile=free` for free access. Authenticated remote access uses `https://api.you.com/mcp` with an Authorization Bearer header.

## Tools and capabilities

The You.com Web Access & AI MCP server can expose these hosted tools:

- `you-search` for web search requests.
- `you-contents` for content extraction.
- `you-balance` for balance information.
- `you-discover` for discovery requests.
- `you-finance` for finance-related requests when selected.
- `you-research` for research requests when selected.

The default endpoint and free profile do not expose the same set. Tool scoping is controlled by the hosted URL or the corresponding environment configuration.

## Limitations and notes

The You.com Web Access & AI MCP server depends on the hosted endpoint for its tools and does not provide an offline or locally implemented API layer.

The package communicates through STDIO when launched with `npx`; remote use requires an MCP client that supports streamable HTTP. The project is licensed under MIT.
