## Documentation

## What yahoo-finance2 does

The yahoo-finance2 MCP server makes selected capabilities from the yahoo-finance2 package available to MCP clients. It connects agents to Yahoo Finance data through an unofficial API and is intended for applications that need market information without building each Yahoo Finance request themselves.

Available API areas include current quotes, historical prices, chart data, options, company searches, trending symbols, screeners, recommendations by symbol, insights, and fundamentals time series. Quote summaries can expose company, financial, ownership, earnings, filing, sector, industry, and other supported modules. The underlying package also includes a combined quote helper.

This places the project in the Finance & Fintech category. It can fit research assistants, market-data workflows, and agents that need to look up symbols or inspect financial information. It should not be treated as an official Yahoo product or as a guaranteed data service.

## How it works

An MCP-compatible client invokes the server's exposed yahoo-finance2 tools. The server uses the package's Yahoo Finance API functionality to retrieve and return results to the client. The same project can also be used independently through its command-line interface or imported into TypeScript and JavaScript applications, but those are separate usage modes from MCP.

The package supports Bun 1 or later, Deno 2 or later, Node 22 or later, and modern Cloudflare environments tested with Workers Vitest under `nodejs_compat`. Browser execution is not supported because of CORS and cookie issues; calls should run on a server, serverless function, or edge function.

## Setup and configuration

Install and configure the package according to the repository's MCP documentation, then connect it to an MCP client. The README specifically identifies Codex, Claude, Cursor, and VS Code as clients that can use the MCP interface. No required environment variables are documented in the provided material.

The repository also ships an Agent Skills-compatible skill. Compatible agents can install that skill with `npx skills add gadicc/yahoo-finance2`; this is an additional agent integration rather than a replacement for MCP configuration.

## Tools and capabilities

The yahoo-finance2 MCP server is based on modules covering:

- Quote and quote-summary retrieval
- Symbol search and trending-symbol lookup
- Historical and chart data
- Options data
- Insights and recommendations by symbol
- Screeners
- Fundamentals time series
- Company, ownership, earnings, filing, sector, and industry details through quote-summary modules

The exact MCP tool names and invocation parameters should be taken from the repository's MCP documentation. The underlying CLI accepts operations such as `search` and `quoteSummary`, with JSON options supported for calls such as selecting quote-summary modules.

## Limitations and notes

Yahoo Finance does not provide an official developer API for this project, and Yahoo Inc. does not endorse it. Service availability, response formats, and data continuity are not guaranteed. Use the package at your own risk and account for possible failures in production workflows.

Delisted stocks have an important data limitation: Yahoo may remove all related information, including historical and chart records from before delisting. A request that previously worked can therefore begin failing, with no supported way to recover the removed data.

The yahoo-finance2 MCP server is also unsuitable for direct browser-side execution. Run requests on a backend or serverless or edge runtime, then pass the required results to the browser.
