## Description
An MCP server that integrates with Xero's API, allowing for standardized access to Xero's accounting and business features.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "xero-mcp-server": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@xeroapi/xero-mcp-server@latest"],
    "env": {
      "XERO_CLIENT_ID": "",
      "XERO_CLIENT_SECRET": "",
      "XERO_SCOPES": "",
      "XERO_CLIENT_BEARER_TOKEN": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `XERO_CLIENT_ID`, `XERO_CLIENT_SECRET`, `XERO_SCOPES`, `XERO_CLIENT_BEARER_TOKEN` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What XeroAPI/xero-mcp-server MCP server does

XeroAPI/xero-mcp-server MCP server provides an MCP interface to Xero's accounting and business features. It lets an MCP client retrieve information from a connected Xero organisation and perform supported create, update, approval, revert, and delete operations.

The available operations cover contacts, accounts, invoices, credit notes, items, quotes, payments, bank transactions, manual journals, tax rates, tracking categories, and organisation details. Reporting tools include profit and loss, balance sheet, trial balance, aged receivables, and aged payables. Payroll-related tools cover employees, leave records and balances, leave types, leave periods, and timesheets.

## How it works

The server translates MCP tool calls into requests to Xero's API. It supports two authentication approaches. Custom Connections use a client ID and client secret for a specific organisation and are presented in the documentation as the preferred option for testing, development, and third-party MCP clients such as Claude Desktop. Bearer-token mode is intended for scenarios involving multiple Xero accounts or an MCP client-managed authentication flow.

The bearer token takes precedence when it is configured alongside a client ID. Xero permissions must match the operations the client will perform. Custom Connections use the applicable bundled or granular scope set, while bearer-token setups require scopes for the accounting, reporting, contacts, settings, payroll, or other APIs being used.

## Setup and configuration

Running XeroAPI/xero-mcp-server requires Node.js 18 or later, npm or pnpm, and a Xero developer account with API credentials. The repository can be installed with npm or pnpm and built with the corresponding build command. The README also provides an `npx` configuration for connecting the packaged server to Claude Desktop.

Custom Connection setups use `XERO_CLIENT_ID` and `XERO_CLIENT_SECRET`. `XERO_SCOPES` is optional and accepts a space-separated scope list; if omitted, the server uses its default scopes. Bearer-token setups use `XERO_CLIENT_BEARER_TOKEN` instead. A Xero account and organisation are required, and the documentation recommends starting with a Demo Company containing sample data. Payroll-specific queries require an organisation in the NZ or UK region.

## Tools and capabilities

The command set includes:

- Listing accounts, contacts, invoices, credit notes, items, quotes, payments, bank transactions, manual journals, tax rates, organisation details, and tracking data.
- Reading financial reports, including profit and loss, balance sheet, trial balance, aged receivables, and aged payables.
- Querying payroll employees, leave information, leave types, leave periods, and timesheets.
- Creating contacts, invoices, credit notes, items, quotes, payments, bank transactions, manual journals, tracking categories, tracking options, and payroll timesheets.
- Updating supported contacts, draft invoices, items, quotes, credit notes, bank transactions, manual journals, tracking categories, tracking options, and payroll timesheet lines.
- Approving, reverting, adding lines to, retrieving, and deleting payroll timesheets.

## Limitations and notes

Access depends on the Xero credentials, organisation, region, and OAuth scopes configured for the connection. Some Xero scopes are deprecated in favor of more granular scopes, so token configuration should follow Xero's current OAuth documentation. The listed invoice, quote, and credit-note update operations apply to draft records according to the tool descriptions. XeroAPI/xero-mcp-server belongs in the 💰 Finance & Fintech category and is intended for clients that can run MCP servers; the provided setup instructions specifically document Claude Desktop integration.
