## What worldbank-mcp does

The worldbank-mcp MCP server exposes World Bank Open Data through the Model Context Protocol. It is intended for agents that need structured country and development data without implementing the World Bank API directly. Available data includes country metadata, economic measures such as GDP and unemployment, social measures such as population and life expectancy, education measures such as literacy and enrollment, and health or nutrition measures such as immunization and tuberculosis incidence.

The server uses the World Bank API at `https://api.worldbank.org/v2`. Its documented endpoints cover country lists, indicator discovery, and country-specific indicator records. Data requests use country codes such as `US`, `CN`, or `IN`.

## How it works

The worldbank-mcp MCP server runs as a local command and communicates with an MCP client. A client can start it with the installed `worldbank-mcp` executable, with `npx worldbank-mcp`, or by invoking the compiled Node.js file. Requests are then handled through MCP tools, while the server uses HTTP calls to retrieve World Bank data.

Most category-specific queries accept a country code, an indicator, and an optional number of years. When the years value is omitted, the documented default is 10 years. Indicator search accepts a keyword, and country listing can be filtered by region or income level.
