## What the Who Ictrp MCP server does

Who Ictrp MCP server connects AI agents to the public WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform at trialsearch.who.int. The platform searches across ClinicalTrials.gov and WHO primary registries, including Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Iranian, German, Australian, and European sources. Results identify the source registry, trial ID, recruitment status, registration date, results-posting status, and ICTRP record URL.

The service is useful when a search needs broader registry coverage than a single national database. It can also retrieve the WHO Trial Registration Data Set and related record fields for a specific trial, including sponsors, study design, phase, recruitment countries, conditions, interventions, outcomes, eligibility, sample size, dates, funding, secondary identifiers, and ethics review status.

## How it works

The Who Ictrp MCP server reads the public ICTRP search and record pages rather than a JSON API. Its upstream search flow uses ASP.NET WebForms requests, including the page state and session cookies needed to submit a search. The server handles those implementation details and returns structured tool responses to the MCP client.

Searches can combine a free-text query with condition, intervention, sponsor, registry, recruiting-only, and result-limit parameters. Free-text searches use WHO synonym expansion. A registry filter can restrict results to sources such as ChiCTR, CTRI, IRCT, DRKS, jRCT, or CT.gov. The individual-record tool accepts a registry-specific trial ID. Unknown IDs return a response indicating that no record was found.

Each response includes data_as_of, indicating when the portal was read. Individual records also include last_refreshed_on. ICTRP refreshes its underlying registry data weekly.

## Setup and configuration

The Who Ictrp MCP server requires no authentication or environment variables. For hosted use, add the MCP URL https://gateway.pipeworx.io/who-ictrp/mcp to a client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf. The hosted endpoint includes the two ICTRP tools and shared Pipeworx gateway tools such as ask_pipeworx and discovery functions.

A local installation is also available through the @pipeworx/mcp-who-ictrp npm package. Run it with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-who-ictrp or configure an MCP client to launch that command. The local process communicates over stdin and stdout and exposes only this pack's tools, without gateway meta-tools or an account requirement. The same gateway can also be called over HTTP at /v1/tools/ictrp_search.

## Tools and capabilities

- `ictrp_search` searches by free text, condition, intervention, sponsor, registry, or recruiting status and accepts a result limit.
- `ictrp_trial` retrieves the full available public record for one registry trial ID.
- Search rows include registry identity, trial ID, status, registration date, results availability, and a record link.
- Trial records include study metadata, participants and recruitment details, outcomes, funding, identifiers, and ethics review status.
- A search with no matches reports zero trials and the query used.

## Limitations and notes

Advanced field searches return at most the newest 100 trials because the ICTRP advanced results do not expose a pager. Basic searches can page through results; with a registry filter, the tool scans up to five pages, or 500 trials. The advanced search does not provide a reliable country filter, so use a registry restriction or inspect the countries field in `ictrp_trial` instead.

ICTRP distinguishes records from trials: multiple registry records can represent one trial when they cite one another as secondary identifiers. The tool does not use the portal's XML or CSV export, which is subject to download terms. It also excludes contact-person details present on some public records. This is an independent, unofficial integration and is not affiliated with the WHO or the upstream portal.
