## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **calculate_bazi** — Calculate four pillars. Unknown time returns no hour pillar. Gregorian date, IANA timezone, explicit day boundary. No prediction.
- **cast_iching** — Cast six three-coin lines or supply your own. Lines are ordered bottom to top, values 6/7/8/9. Returns original and changed King Wen hexagrams.
- **draw_tarot** — Draw one or three cards from a full 78-card deck without replacement. Reversals optional. Symbolic reflection only.
- **calculate_ziwei** — Calculate Zi Wei Dou Shu twelve palaces from an entered local civil date and known time. iztro default school, no solar-time correction. Sex is a traditional calculation parameter.
- **search_library** — Search Wenbu original guides, symbols and curated reference metadata. This is a bounded catalogue, not a web search. Search snippets do not mean the source was read.
- **read_library** — Read a complete Wenbu guide or symbol by search_library ID. Handbook guides return Markdown, outline and export links without truncation. Optionally provide a section ID from the outline; the returned scope makes partial reads explicit. A corrected stale citation returns source_superseded with a current-document read action, not withdrawn content or read evidence. External reference entries are metadata only; use your host browsing capability to verify them.
- **get_daily_card** — Get a public daily reflection card and practice using the server calendar in an IANA timezone. No model, account, personal history or quota turn. Can differ from a personal browser/account card. Keep the returned result for follow-up.

## What Wenbu · 问卜 does

Wenbu · 问卜 provides MCP access to free BaZi, I Ching, tarot, Zi Wei Dou Shu, learning materials, and a daily reflection card. The service performs the calculations and draws, while the connected host supplies any interpretation. Its reference catalogue contains Wenbu guides, symbol notes, and curated metadata for selected external sources.

The tools are designed for questions that benefit from explicit methods and inspectable inputs. BaZi uses Gregorian dates, an IANA timezone, and a selected day-boundary convention. I Ching preserves the six lines in bottom-to-top order. Tarot draws from a complete 78-card deck, and Zi Wei uses a known local civil birth time with the traditional sex parameter.

## How it works

Connect an MCP client to `https://wenbu.app/mcp` using Streamable HTTP. The endpoint exposes seven tools and does not require the model provider's API key. Set `locale` explicitly to `zh` or `en` when a language choice matters; MCP defaults to English, while some traditional names remain in Chinese.

The calculation tools return structured results that the host can explain or combine with library content. `get_daily_card` uses the server's calendar and an IANA timezone. Its result is public and can differ from a card shown in a personal browser session, so retain the returned result when using it in a follow-up.

The repository also includes a dependency-free CLI and a local application workflow, but MCP users can use the hosted endpoint without running the full project locally.

## Setup and configuration

For hosted use, add the Streamable HTTP endpoint to an MCP-compatible client. No environment variable or API key is required to run the MCP connection.

For local development, the project requires Node.js 22.12 or later and npm. The documented workflow is:

The preview server runs at `http://localhost:8787`. Set `WENBU_URL=http://127.0.0.1:8787` for the included CLI when using that local preview. AI features are separate from MCP and require server-only `DEEPSEEK_API_KEY` and `QUOTA_SALT` in an ignored `.dev.vars` file; those values should not be placed in browser code.

## Tools and capabilities

- `calculate_bazi` returns the Four Pillars, handles an unknown birth time without inventing an hour pillar, and supports explicit timezone and day-boundary conventions. It calculates a chart rather than making a prediction.
- `cast_iching` performs a six-line three-coin cast or accepts six supplied values of 6, 7, 8, or 9. It returns the original and changed King Wen hexagrams.
- `draw_tarot` draws one or three cards without replacement from the full deck, with optional reversals. The result is intended for symbolic reflection.
- `calculate_ziwei` calculates the twelve palaces using an entered local civil date and known time. It follows the default iztro school without solar-time correction.
- `search_library` searches Wenbu's bounded catalogue of guides, symbols, and curated reference metadata.
- `read_library` reads a complete Wenbu guide or symbol by ID, or a selected outline section. Handbook results include Markdown, an outline, and export links.
- `get_daily_card` returns the public daily reflection card and practice for the server date in an IANA timezone.

## Limitations and notes

This is a bounded catalogue, not unrestricted web search. External reference results contain metadata and links; the host must browse those pages itself before relying on their contents. Search snippets do not establish that an entire source was read.

BaZi output does not itself establish prediction, element strength, or favorable elements. Tarot is symbolic, and the daily card is a reflective practice rather than a personal horoscope. Zi Wei requires a known time and retains Chinese palace and star names in some output.

The MCP layer does not call DeepSeek. Any interpretation, report writing, or citation beyond returned source content is performed by the connected host or another service. Calculation requests are sent to Wenbu's Cloudflare service, and exported context can contain private birth or other personal information.
