## Description
Free, open-source MCP server giving AI assistants 17 weather tools — a one-call weather summary plus forecasts, alerts, air quality, marine, radar, lightning, rivers, wildfires, and historical data back to 1940. Ask by city name or coordinates. Built on free public APIs (NOAA, Open-Meteo). No API keys, no signup.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **get_forecast** — Daily/hourly forecasts up to 16 days by coordinates, saved location, or city name, plus a 2-hour, 15-minute precipitation nowcast in North America and Central Europe (`granularity="minutely"`) (NOAA publishes 7 days daily and ~6.5 days hourly in the US, and says so when you ask for more; `source="o…
- **get_current_conditions** — Current weather: temperature, wind, humidity, pressure; NOAA station observations in the US (plus heat index/wind chill, snow depth, optional NOAA fire-weather indices), Open-Meteo model data elsewhere (with an optional computed Fosberg fire-weather index), or real airport station observations worl…
- **get_alerts** — Active watches, warnings, and advisories sorted by severity; official national warnings for the US (NOAA), Canada (ECCC), 38 European countries (MeteoAlarm), India (NDMA SACHET), the Philippines (PAGASA), Indonesia (BMKG), and Japan (JMA)
- **get_historical_weather** — Hourly/daily observations from 1940 to present
- **get_weather_summary** — One-call overview combining current conditions, forecast, and alerts (optionally air quality and lightning); a life-threatening NWS alert is surfaced once above the whole summary, not once per section
- **search_location** — Geocode place names to coordinates ("Paris" → 48.85, 2.35)
- **get_air_quality** — AQI (US/European scales), pollutants, UV index, health guidance; current pollen levels for European locations (or worldwide with an optional key); optional day-grouped forecast up to 7 days with per-day peak AQI and UV
- **get_marine_conditions** — Wave height, swell, ocean currents, sea state on WMO Code Table 3700 (Douglas sea scale) with a severity marker and legend — includes Great Lakes and major US bays; forecast up to 16 days
- **get_weather_imagery** — Precipitation radar (static or 2-hour animated loops) + GOES satellite imagery; `composite: true` returns a finished radar map over a base map as an image
- **get_lightning_activity** — Real-time strike detection with 4-level proximity safety assessment
- **get_river_conditions** — US: NWPS gauge levels, flood stages, streamflow, rise/fall trends, forecast series. Great Britain: Environment Agency observed river levels against each gauge's published typical range. Elsewhere: GloFAS modeled discharge snapped to the nearest river channel, with ensemble forecast
- **get_wildfire_info** — US: named incidents with containment, size, and safety guidance from the nearest *uncontained* fire. Elsewhere: NASA FIRMS satellite heat detections (VIIRS, near real-time), clustered with distance, bearing, and intensity
- **check_service_status** — Checks that NOAA and Open-Meteo are reachable, lists the upstreams it does not check, plus cache statistics
- **save_location** — Save places as aliases ("home", "cabin") with optional activity tags
- **list_saved_locations** — List all saved locations
- **get_saved_location** — Details for one saved location
- **remove_saved_location** — Delete a saved location

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "weather-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@dangahagan/weather-mcp@latest"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What weather-mcp does

The weather-mcp MCP server gives MCP-compatible AI clients access to weather observations, forecasts, warnings, and related environmental data. Its coverage includes current and forecast conditions, historical weather from 1940 onward, air quality, marine conditions, precipitation radar, satellite imagery, lightning, river levels, and wildfire information. It belongs in the Environment & Nature category and is aimed at agents that need location-aware answers rather than a single forecast endpoint.

Queries can use a city name, latitude and longitude, or a saved location alias such as `home` or `cabin`. The server can geocode place names, combine several data types into one weather summary, and report the age or source of observations where applicable.

## How it works

The weather-mcp MCP server runs locally and sends requests from the client machine to public upstream services. NOAA supplies detailed US weather data, while Open-Meteo provides model-based data in other areas and can extend some forecast queries. Other capabilities use sources such as MET Norway, USGS, NIFC, NASA FIRMS, RainViewer, and Blitzortung.org, depending on the tool and location.

US coverage is generally richer than international coverage. Current conditions may use NOAA stations in the United States, Open-Meteo data elsewhere, or worldwide airport observations when the METAR source is requested. River and wildfire results also vary by region: US river gauges, Great Britain observations, and GloFAS modeled discharge are handled differently, while US incidents and international satellite heat detections use different wildfire data.

## Setup and configuration

Install the official npm package as a local stdio MCP server:

```bash
claude mcp add weather -- npx -y @dangahagan/weather-mcp@latest
```

For another MCP client, add a server entry with `npx` as the command and `-y @dangahagan/weather-mcp@latest` as its arguments. Node.js 18 or newer is required. The default configuration needs no API keys, account, or signup. The project documents optional keys for additional data, but none are required to use the server's core tools.

## Tools and capabilities

The 17 tools include:

- Forecasts, current conditions, alerts, and an aggregated weather summary.
- Place-name geocoding and saved-location creation, listing, lookup, and deletion.
- Historical hourly and daily weather reaching back to 1940.
- Air-quality indexes, pollutants, UV, health guidance, and supported pollen data.
- Wave, swell, current, and sea-state forecasts, including the Great Lakes and major US bays.
- Static or animated precipitation radar and GOES imagery, with an option to return a composed radar map.
- Lightning proximity assessment, river levels and forecasts, and wildfire incidents or satellite detections.
- Service-status checks for NOAA and Open-Meteo plus cache statistics.

Forecasts can reach 16 days where upstream data supports that range. A short-term, 15-minute precipitation nowcast is available in North America and Central Europe. Alerts cover official warning systems in the US, Canada, much of Europe, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan.

## Limitations and notes

Free upstream services impose coverage differences and fair-use limits. NOAA forecast ranges can be shorter than the requested maximum, and some features are regional or model-based outside the US. Pollen data, river observations, wildfire details, and official alerts depend on the relevant geographic source.

A missing warning banner is not an all-clear; use the dedicated alerts tool for an authoritative alert check. Imagery, observations, and modeled values also have different update timing and reliability. The server checks NOAA and Open-Meteo availability, but its service-status tool does not check every upstream source.
