## What vedurstofa-mcp MCP server does

vedurstofa-mcp MCP server connects agents to weather and earthquake data from the Icelandic Meteorological Office at vedur.is. It is limited to Icelandic data and is intended for MCP-compatible applications that need current conditions, forecasts, alerts, or seismic activity.

The server provides current AWS observations such as temperature, wind, pressure, humidity, and precipitation. It also exposes multi-day station forecasts, narrative forecasts and text warnings, structured severe-weather alerts, a station catalog, and recent earthquake records. Station requests can use numeric IDs or names with or without Icelandic diacritics. Unrecognized names produce a typo-tolerant suggestion instead of silently selecting a different station.

## How it works

The application communicates with an MCP client over standard input and output. Agents select tools based on the question: current conditions use `get_weather_now`, forecast questions use `get_weather_forecast`, and prose outlooks or text warnings use `get_weather_text`. `get_weather_warnings` returns structured CAP v1 alerts, while `get_earthquakes` supports named volcanic-region presets and latitude, longitude, and radius filters. `list_weather_stations` helps resolve station names and IDs.

Each response is wrapped in JSON containing `attribution`, `source`, `fetched_at`, and `data`. Some responses may also include `errors`, `degraded`, or `truncated`. Timestamps are ISO 8601 UTC, and measurements use degrees Celsius, meters per second, hectopascals, millimeters, and kilometers. Applications displaying results should preserve or cite the attribution value.

## Setup and configuration

vedurstofa-mcp runs on Node.js 18 or newer. Start it without credentials using `npx -y vedurstofa-mcp`, or pin a version such as `npx -y vedurstofa-mcp@1.0.0`. Add that command to an MCP client configuration using the `npx` command and `vedurstofa-mcp` argument.

No API key, account, or other required environment variable is specified. Setting `VEDURSTOFA_DEBUG=1` enables debug logs on stderr; stdout remains reserved for MCP protocol traffic.

## Tools and capabilities

- `get_weather_now`: retrieve current station observations.
- `get_weather_forecast`: retrieve per-station multi-day forecasts and narrow the result with an `hours` parameter.
- `get_weather_text`: retrieve national, multi-day, or warning text in English or Icelandic.
- `get_weather_warnings`: retrieve structured severe-weather alerts in CAP v1 format.
- `get_earthquakes`: filter recent events by supported region presets or arbitrary coordinates and radius.
- `list_weather_stations`: inspect the station catalog and resolve place names.

The earthquake region presets include Reykjanes, Katla, Bárðarbunga, Tjörnes, Askja, Hekla, and Grímsvötn. These tools support workflows such as comparing conditions across Icelandic cities, checking alerts before a journey, or finding earthquakes near a volcanic system.

## Limitations and notes

The per-station forecast feature depends on HTML and inline JavaScript scraped from vedur.is. If the upstream page changes or scraping fails, the tool falls back to the national text forecast and marks the response as degraded. Clients should expose that status rather than presenting the fallback as a normal structured forecast.

Forecast coverage is limited to roughly 13 major named stations; other locations may use a regional page or lack a scrapeable forecast. vedurstofa-mcp MCP server cannot answer weather questions for locations outside Iceland. The repository code is MIT-licensed, while the meteorological data belongs to the Icelandic Meteorological Office and is provided under CC BY-SA 4.0.
