## What Usertour MCP Server MCP server does

Usertour MCP Server MCP server exposes Usertour's onboarding platform to compatible AI assistants. Usertour is an open-source product for creating in-app product tours, checklists, launchers, and surveys. Through MCP, an assistant can turn a natural-language request into onboarding work inside a project, such as a flow for a feature, a feedback survey, or a modal containing a video.

The server is intended for teams that want AI-assisted authoring rather than only runtime delivery. These examples demonstrate supported workflows, but they do not define a fixed list of individually named MCP tool methods.

## How it works

A compatible MCP client connects to the hosted endpoint:

The endpoint discovers the authorization flow automatically. After connection, the assistant can receive instructions about the onboarding experience and apply the resulting work through Usertour. The documented client examples include Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and VS Code; the README also points to connection instructions for ChatGPT and other clients.

For a self-hosted installation, point the client at the `/mcp` endpoint on the organization's Usertour instance. The server can therefore be used with Usertour Cloud or with a deployment operated by the user.

## Setup and configuration

For the hosted service, use the public MCP URL and follow the authorization flow discovered by the client. Claude Code users can install the Usertour plugin, which configures the MCP connection and adds authoring skills:

Self-hosted users should find the MCP URL under **Settings → MCP** and use that URL instead of the hosted endpoint. When using the Claude Code plugin with a self-hosted instance, set `USERTOUR_MCP_URL` before launching Claude Code.

The underlying Usertour application can be self-deployed with Docker by copying `.env.example` to `.env`, setting the required application environment values, and running `docker compose up -d`. The application is then available at `http://localhost:8011`. Those application settings are separate from the MCP client connection configuration.

Usertour itself supports custom user attributes, event tracking, audience targeting, multiple environments such as staging and production, version tracking, configurable themes, and visual customization. The README presents these as platform capabilities; it does not confirm that every one is exposed as a separate MCP operation.

## Limitations and notes

It also does not state whether the MCP endpoint supports offline use. The documented authoring examples assume that the assistant can inspect the target project's design system and, where necessary, modify the project to connect the Usertour SDK.

Usertour supports browser-based applications and multi-page as well as single-page apps. Its onboarding features are therefore relevant when the target experience runs in a web application. Self-hosted deployments require the broader Usertour application setup in addition to configuring an MCP client.
