Screenshots, PDFs, video, markdown and page data from any website, via Urlbox.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "urlbox": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@urlbox/screenshot-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "URLBOX_API_KEY": "",
      "SECRET_KEY": "",
      "URLBOX_DOWNLOAD_DIR": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `URLBOX_API_KEY`, `SECRET_KEY`, `URLBOX_DOWNLOAD_DIR` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What Urlbox MCP server does

Urlbox MCP server gives an AI assistant access to Urlbox's hosted browser-rendering service. It accepts website URLs and can produce screenshots, PDFs, videos, HTML, Markdown, and article text. The server can also compare pages and expose tools for managing Urlbox projects, webhooks, and usage.

This fits browser-based workflows where an agent needs to inspect a page visually, create a document or video from a URL, or turn web content into text. Example tasks include capturing a mobile layout, removing ads or cookie banners from a screenshot, generating a tagged PDF with an outline, and converting an article to Markdown.

The project is listed in the 📂 Browser Automation category. It is intended for clients that can connect to an MCP endpoint or launch a local stdio process.

## How it works

The recommended option is the hosted MCP endpoint at `https://api.urlbox.com/mcp`. A compatible client connects to that URL and authenticates with Urlbox. Clients that support sign-in can authenticate through the connection flow; clients without sign-in support can send an API key in an `Authorization: Bearer <key>` header.

The repository also provides a local bridge distributed as `@urlbox/screenshot-mcp`. The bridge runs on the user's machine over stdio and forwards requests to the hosted service, so its tool set comes from the remote server. It adds `save_render`, which downloads a render URL returned by a Urlbox tool to the local computer. Existing files are not overwritten.

## Setup and configuration

For the hosted service, configure the client with the MCP URL and sign in to Urlbox, or provide an API key as a bearer token. Organisation keys beginning with `ubx_org_` provide access to every tool. A project secret key provides access to rendering tools only. Keys are available in the Urlbox dashboard.

For local clients, use `npx -y @urlbox/screenshot-mcp` as the MCP command and set `URLBOX_API_KEY`. The bridge requires Node.js 20 or newer. `SECRET_KEY` remains supported for configurations from version 1.x, but `URLBOX_API_KEY` takes precedence when both variables are present. `URLBOX_DOWNLOAD_DIR` changes where `save_render` places files; the default is `~/Downloads`.

## Tools and capabilities

The Urlbox MCP server supports:

- Website screenshots
- PDF and video rendering
- HTML, Markdown, and article-text extraction
- Page comparison
- Urlbox project, webhook, and usage management
- Local saving of render URLs through `save_render`

Project secret keys are limited to rendering capabilities. Use an organisation API key when project, webhook, or usage management is needed.

## Limitations and notes

The hosted connection requires a Urlbox account and authentication. A project secret key does not unlock the account-management tools. The local package is a bridge rather than a separate rendering implementation, and it forwards requests to the hosted server.

The local bridge is intended for clients that can start an MCP server over stdio. Clients that support a remote MCP connection can use the hosted endpoint without installing the package. The local `save_render` tool writes to the configured download directory and does not replace existing files. The package is licensed under MIT.
