## Description
Universities MCP — Hipolabs Universities API (free, no auth)

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **search_universities** — Search universities worldwide by name and/or country using the Hipolabs API. Returns name, country, state/province, web pages, and email domains. At least one of name or country must be provided.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

  "universities": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@pipeworx/mcp-universities"]
  }
}

## Documentation

## What universities MCP server does

The universities MCP server exposes the Hipolabs Universities API through MCP. Its main operation, `search_universities`, finds universities worldwide using a name, a country, or both. At least one of these inputs must be supplied for a search.

Results can include the institution name, country, state or province, web pages, and email domains. This makes the server suitable for agent workflows that need to identify institutions, check whether a university matches a country or name, or retrieve basic contact and web-domain details. The available data is limited to what the Hipolabs API returns through this search operation.

## How it works

The hosted connection is available at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/universities/mcp`. It uses the Pipeworx gateway and can be added to an MCP client as a remote server. A pack endpoint lists the universities tool together with shared Pipeworx meta-tools, so the tool list may contain more entries than the pack-specific operation. The gateway's `initialize` response provides the authoritative scope for the connection.

The gateway also offers a full endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp`. Both hosted URLs use the same gateway and data sources; the pack URL lists the universities tools directly, while the full URL lists the broader catalog directly. The shared `ask_pipeworx` operation can route questions across the catalog from either connection.

For direct HTTP use, send a JSON POST request to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/search_universities`.

## Setup and configuration

Add the hosted endpoint to an MCP client with a server entry named `universities` and the URL `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/universities/mcp`. The README names Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf as compatible examples.

A local installation is also available through the `@pipeworx/mcp-universities` package. Configure the client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-universities` as the command and pass no additional arguments. This mode speaks MCP over standard input and output, requires no Pipeworx account, and avoids a gateway round trip.

The local process exposes only the pack's own tools. It does not add the shared gateway meta-tools or provide `ask_pipeworx` routing. No environment variables or authentication credentials are documented as required.

## Tools and capabilities

- `search_universities`: Search by university name, country, or both.
- Return institution names and geographic fields.
- Return web pages and email domains when supplied by the API.
- Call the operation through MCP, hosted HTTP, or the local stdio package.

The gateway's shared tools are separate from the pack-specific search tool. Their presence applies to the hosted gateway connection, not to the standalone local process.
