## Description
UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Indicators MCP — UN Statistics Division.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **list_goals** — List the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (code, title, description). Optionally drill into one goal to get its targets and indicators.
- **list_indicators** — The queryable catalog of SDG indicators. Each indicator (e.g. "1.1.1") nests its data series with their series codes (e.g. "SI_POV_DAY1"). Use a series code as seriesCode in get_series_data.
- **list_series** — Flat list of all SDG data series (series code + description + goal/target/indicator it belongs to). Series codes are what you pass to get_series_data. Use this when you want the raw series list rather than the indicator-nested view from list_indicators.
- **list_geoareas** — List geographic areas with their M49 area codes (e.g. 1 = World, 4 = Afghanistan, 8 = Albania). Pass an M49 code as areaCode in get_series_data.
- **get_series_data** — Get observations for an SDG series in a geographic area over a time range. seriesCode comes from list_indicators/list_series; areaCode is an M49 code from list_geoareas. Returns { data: [...] } where each observation has value, timePeriodStart, geoAreaName, source, footnotes, etc.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "un-sdg": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@pipeworx/mcp-un-sdg"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What Un Sdg MCP server does

Un Sdg MCP server gives AI agents access to structured United Nations Sustainable Development Goals indicator data. It covers the 17 goals, their targets and indicators, the underlying data series, geographic areas, and observations for selected series and places.

The server supports two connection models. A hosted MCP endpoint is available through Pipeworx at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/un-sdg/mcp`. The same service can also be used through the full Pipeworx gateway. For local use, the `@pipeworx/mcp-un-sdg` package runs as a stdio MCP server and exposes only this pack’s five data tools.

## How it works

Start with `list_goals` when you need the SDG hierarchy. It can return the 17 goals with their codes, titles, and descriptions, and can optionally provide the targets and indicators for one goal.

Use `list_indicators` to inspect indicators and their nested data series. If a flat catalog is easier to process, `list_series` returns series codes, descriptions, and the goal, target, and indicator associated with each series. A series code, such as `SI_POV_DAY1`, is required for data retrieval.

Call `list_geoareas` to resolve locations to UN M49 area codes. Then call `get_series_data` with a series code, an area code, and a time range. The response contains a `data` array with observations that can include values, time-period starts, geographic names, sources, and footnotes.

## Setup and configuration

For a remote connection, add the Pipeworx endpoint to an MCP client configuration:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "un-sdg": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/un-sdg/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

For local stdio execution, configure the package with `npx`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "un-sdg": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-un-sdg"]
    }
  }
}
```

The local mode does not require a Pipeworx account or a gateway round trip. The tools can also be called over HTTP through the Pipeworx tool API.

## Tools and capabilities

Un Sdg MCP server provides these pack-specific tools:

- `list_goals`: Browse the SDG hierarchy and optionally drill into one goal.
- `list_indicators`: View indicators with their related data series.
- `list_series`: Browse the complete flat series catalog.
- `list_geoareas`: Map geographic names to M49 codes.
- `get_series_data`: Retrieve observations for a series, area, and time range.

The hosted pack endpoint also includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools, so its tool listing is larger than the five pack-specific tools. The local package does not include those gateway-wide tools. The gateway’s `ask_pipeworx` tool can route natural-language questions across the broader Pipeworx catalog.

## Limitations and notes

`get_series_data` depends on identifiers returned by the catalog tools: use a series code from `list_indicators` or `list_series`, and an M49 code from `list_geoareas`. The hosted connection’s exact tool scope is reported by its `initialize` response and may include shared gateway tools in addition to the SDG tools.
