## What the Transcripted MCP server does

The Transcripted MCP server connects AI clients to notes created by the Transcripted Mac app. Those notes can come from recorded meetings, dictation, imported audio or video, and the optional Writing feature. Transcripted saves each capture as a Markdown file with metadata, timestamps, and speaker labels where available.

The server provides read-only access. Agents can search the saved material and read relevant notes, but they cannot edit or delete files through the MCP connection. This makes it suitable for questions about prior discussions, commitments, decisions, or written material without giving an agent mutation access to the capture library.

Transcripted itself is a macOS application for Apple silicon running macOS 26 or later. Its transcription runs locally, and the application does not require an account. The MCP layer works with the files the app has already saved.

## How it works

The Mac app records or transcribes content locally, then writes captures to a Markdown-based library. The default location is:

```text
~/Library/Application Support/Transcripted/captures/
```

You can change the Capture library location in Transcripted settings, including moving the files into another location such as an Obsidian vault. The MCP connection uses the configured notes so an AI client can locate and read relevant content.

Transcripted MCP server access does not make the notes remote by itself. However, if you connect a cloud AI client, the notes that client reads are sent to that provider according to the provider's service. Transcripted says its own audio, transcripts, and voice profiles stay on the Mac.

## Setup and configuration

Install Transcripted by downloading the signed macOS application or with Homebrew:

```bash
brew tap r3dbars/transcripted https://github.com/r3dbars/transcripted
brew install --cask transcripted
```

Open the app and complete the required permissions. Microphone access is needed for recording and dictation; System Audio Recording is needed to capture the other side of meetings. Accessibility is used for keyboard shortcuts and inserting dictation into other applications. Calendar access is optional and supports meeting reminders.

To connect an AI client, open Transcripted, go to Agent, and select Connect next to Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor. For another client, the Something else option provides a ready-made prompt describing where the notes are stored. The README does not specify environment variables for this connection.

## Tools and capabilities

The Transcripted MCP server supports:

- Searching the Transcripted note library.
- Reading meeting, dictation, and writing content.
- Using Markdown files with timestamps and speaker names as agent context.
- Answering questions from locally saved captures without write or delete operations.

The separate `transcripted-live` plugin is for Claude Code rather than the basic read-only MCP workflow. It can provide an ongoing meeting as context while recording, but it requires Transcripted 1.1.69 or later and Claude Code 2.1.287 or later.

## Limitations and notes

The server depends on the Transcripted Mac app and its saved files. It is not described as a general meeting-platform integration, and it does not itself record calls or produce summaries. Transcripted saves full transcripts; summaries, decisions, and action items must be requested from the connected AI.

The documented host requirements are Apple silicon, macOS 26 Tahoe or later, and approximately 700 MB for the application and included speech models. Audio can be retained for replay, with optional deletion after 7 or 30 days; transcripts remain. Anonymous crash reports and usage statistics are enabled by default but can be disabled in Privacy settings.
