## Description
Search, compare, and get pricing for 8,600+ software tools with verified data.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "toolradar": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","toolradar-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "TOOLRADAR_API_KEY": "",
      "TOOLRADAR_API_URL": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `TOOLRADAR_API_KEY`, `TOOLRADAR_API_URL` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What toolradar MCP server does

The toolradar MCP server gives an MCP-compatible assistant access to Toolradar’s software catalog, which contains more than 8,600 tools. It is intended for software discovery and evaluation rather than controlling the products it describes. Agents can use the catalog to find candidates, inspect individual products, compare options, identify alternatives, and check pricing.

Toolradar’s records include editorial scores, weekly-checked pricing, G2 and Capterra ratings, pros and cons, structured features, short summaries, alternatives, and funding information supplied through Signalbase. The available data supports questions such as finding free project management software, selecting a CRM for a small team under a specified monthly budget, or comparing several named products.

## How it works

The server acts as a thin client over Toolradar’s REST API. When an assistant receives a relevant request, it calls the MCP tools and returns structured results from the remote database. The documented operations include `recommend_tools`, `search_tools`, `get_tool`, `compare_tools`, `get_alternatives`, `get_pricing`, `list_categories`, and `report_issue`.

Recommendations can be filtered or ranked using requirements such as category, pricing model, budget, and described use case. Comparisons cover two to four tools. The issue-reporting operation lets users submit suspected data problems, including outdated prices, unavailable products, or missing features, for review.

A separate Claude Code skill is available from the repository. After installation, `/recommend-tool` searches and compares leading options and formats a recommendation with a top pick, runner-up, and budget pick.

## Setup and configuration

The toolradar MCP server is installed and launched with `npx -y toolradar-mcp`. For Claude Desktop, add it as a server whose command is `npx` and whose argument is `-y toolradar-mcp`; provide `TOOLRADAR_API_KEY` in the server environment. Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and Cline each have documented setup paths using the same package and key.

`TOOLRADAR_API_KEY` is required. A free key provides 100 API calls per day and is obtained from the Toolradar API keys dashboard. `TOOLRADAR_API_URL` is optional and can replace the default `https://toolradar.com/api/v1` endpoint. The service resets the free allowance at midnight UTC.

## Tools and capabilities

- Search by keyword, category, or pricing model.
- Recommend software against a described need and hard constraints.
- Retrieve a tool’s pricing, features, scores, pros, and cons.
- Compare two to four products side by side.
- Find competitors and alternatives for a selected tool.
- Browse available software categories.
- Submit data-quality reports for verification.
- Retrieve detailed pricing tiers and included features.

The toolradar MCP server can also be accessed through Toolradar’s REST API by sending a bearer token to the documented API endpoint. This is useful for applications that do not use MCP directly.

## Limitations and notes

Results depend on the data available in Toolradar’s catalog and the API account’s request allowance. The free plan is limited to 100 calls per day, so high-volume workflows may require a different arrangement. Although pricing is described as checked weekly and new tools are added daily, software data can still change after the latest verification.

The server provides information about software products; the supplied material does not describe actions for provisioning, configuring, or operating those products. The repository lists Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and Cline, and states that other MCP clients can use the server when they support the documented stdio setup.
