- **thumbtack_search_pros** — Search Thumbtack for local service pros by trade and US ZIP code. Returns up to 10 ranked pros with rating, review count, lifetime hires, mean response time and profile URL. Anonymous — no account needed.
- **thumbtack_resolve_service** — Resolve a loose service name to the canonical Thumbtack slug by asking Thumbtack (it canonicalises via redirect, e.g. "plumbing" -> "plumbers"). Use before assuming a slug is right.
- **thumbtack_get_pro** — Read a Thumbtack pro's profile: name, description, location, aggregate rating, plus credentials (background check, licences) and the section inventory. Takes a profile URL from thumbtack_search_pros.

- **thumbtack_graphql** — Escape hatch: issue an arbitrary read-only query against Thumbtack's anonymous GraphQL endpoint. Introspection is disabled upstream, so field names must come from a page's Apollo state. Mutations are refused.
- **thumbtack_healthcheck** — Check that Thumbtack's anonymous surface is reachable and still has the response shape this server expects. Reports the server version, the HTML page probe and the GraphQL probe separately, each with a `kind` (ok, edge_blocked, http, transport, timeout, rate_limited, shape_changed, unknown).

## What thumbtack-mcp MCP server does

The thumbtack-mcp MCP server connects MCP clients to public Thumbtack consumer pages and Thumbtack's anonymous GraphQL endpoint. Its primary use is local service-pro research: an agent can search by trade and US ZIP code, inspect returned professionals, and read profile details, credentials, ratings, and reviews.

Search results contain up to 10 pros and can include each professional's rating, review count, lifetime hires, average response time, and profile URL. A separate service-resolution tool converts informal service labels into Thumbtack's canonical form, such as resolving `plumbing` to `plumbers`.

This belongs in the Search & Data Extraction category. It is intended for reading publicly available consumer-facing data rather than managing a Thumbtack account or contacting providers.

## How it works

The server reads three verified Thumbtack surfaces. Search pages provide result data embedded in `__NEXT_DATA__`. Profile pages expose information through `window.__APOLLO_STATE__` and schema.org JSON-LD. The GraphQL endpoint at `app.thumbtack.com/graphql` accepts anonymous read queries, while introspection is disabled.

The implementation accounts for response details that matter when consuming the data. A GraphQL request may return HTTP 200 while also carrying an `errors[]` object, so the response body must be checked rather than relying on status alone. Profile JSON-LD uses trade-specific types, such as `Plumber`, instead of always using `LocalBusiness`.

## Setup and configuration

Add the server to an MCP client's configuration with the `npx` command and the `@chrischall/thumbtack-mcp` package. The provided configuration uses `-y` so the package can be run without a separate global installation.

No environment variables are required. The server needs no Thumbtack login, API key, or browser extension because it uses anonymous consumer pages and GraphQL requests.

## Tools and capabilities

The thumbtack-mcp MCP server provides these tools:

The service-resolution and healthcheck tools do not accept `view`.

## Limitations and notes

The thumbtack-mcp MCP server is unofficial and may break if Thumbtack changes its pages or endpoint behavior. The repository notes that use may conflict with Thumbtack's terms of service, so evaluate that risk before deployment.

It cannot access account-specific projects, messages, or quotes. Thumbtack's consumer write paths require a login protected by reCAPTCHA, so server-side account login and write actions are not supported. The documented Partner Platform API is also outside this server's scope because it requires partner credentials.

A shell-only skill in the repository covers the same surface with `curl` and `jq` for one-off lookups and scripts without running an MCP process.
