## What Texas Ag Opinions does

The Texas Ag Opinions MCP server provides MCP tools for researching Texas Attorney General opinions issued since 1939. It covers opinion lookup, recorded subsequent-treatment status, and a constrained statute search. The source material includes opinions from 16 Attorneys General and uses the agency’s published opinion-number ranges to identify the correct Attorney General for a requested number.

`tx_ag_opinion_lookup` returns available metadata such as the Attorney General, date, requestor, RQ-request number, topic categories, one-sentence summary, full opinion text, and statute citations extracted from the opinion PDF. It also reports the opinion’s own recorded subsequent-treatment status when one exists.

`tx_ag_opinion_status` checks the Attorney General’s courtesy index for entries stating that an opinion was overruled, modified, affirmed, superseded, or withdrawn. The Texas Ag Opinions MCP server is listed in the ⚖️ Legal category and is suited to legal research workflows that need to inspect a particular opinion or verify whether the agency has recorded later treatment.

## How it works

For an opinion lookup or status request, the package first maps the bare opinion number to the appropriate Attorney General slug using a stored table of published number ranges. It then fetches the correctly qualified opinion page. Lookup also retrieves the linked PDF and extracts its text. Requestor information, the RQ number, the question presented, and statutory citations come from best-effort regular-expression extraction rather than a dedicated legal citation parser.

The status data comes from the Attorney General’s page of opinions with recorded overruled, modified, affirmed, superseded, or withdrawn treatment. That index contained about 381 entries when captured on 2026-10-07. `tx_ag_statute_search` searches those entries for a statute citation or keyword, including text describing what later statute or case affected an opinion.

The gateway endpoint adds shared Pipeworx tools, including routing and discovery tools, while the local package exposes only this pack’s three tools. Both routes use the same underlying sources. The gateway also exposes HTTP tool calls without requiring an MCP client.

## Setup and configuration

The Texas Ag Opinions MCP server is keyless. Add the hosted endpoint `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/texas-ag-opinions/mcp` to an MCP client, or use the full Pipeworx gateway at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp`. A local installation can run with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-texas-ag-opinions` and communicates over stdin/stdout. No environment variables or Pipeworx account are required for the standalone mode, and the first hosted calls require no account.

For direct HTTP use, send a JSON POST to the relevant gateway tool endpoint, such as `/v1/tools/tx_ag_opinion_lookup`, with an `opinion_number` value.

## Tools and capabilities

- Look up a numbered opinion and return metadata, extracted full text, and statute citations.
- Check whether the AG’s index records later treatment of an opinion.
- Search the recorded-treatment index for a statute citation or keyword.
- Detect Cloudflare challenge pages during live fetches and report an upstream error instead of parsing them as opinion content.

## Limitations and notes

The statute search is not a full-archive search. It covers only the approximately 381 opinions in the recorded-treatment index, not all roughly 19,000 opinions. It is therefore useful for questions about whether an opinion was affected by later authority, but not for finding every opinion that discusses a statute. Responses include a coverage note describing this limitation.

A status result of `not_listed` does not establish that an opinion remains good law; the AG notes that its list may be incomplete. Citation extraction is also best effort. Multi-section citations may be truncated, and citations using formats outside the expected Texas code pattern may not be captured.

The Texas Ag Opinions MCP server relies on live Attorney General pages and PDFs for lookup and status operations. The site may return a Cloudflare JavaScript challenge after repeated requests; the tools identify that condition and fail loudly. The integration is independent and unofficial, with no stated affiliation or endorsement by the upstream provider.
