## What Tennessee Code does

The Tennessee Code MCP server gives AI agents access to Tennessee Code Annotated (T.C.A.) statutes through two operations: citation lookup and topic search. A citation lookup returns the full text of a specified section, such as `39-13-202`, along with metadata about later Public Chapters associated with that citation. Topic search uses a local index of statutory citations and official catchlines rather than searching the full body text of every statute.

The package is intended for the ⚖️ Legal category and is useful for research workflows that need to locate Tennessee provisions or inspect the text available in a historical public-domain release. It is an independent, unofficial integration and does not represent the Tennessee Code Commission or LexisNexis.

## How it works

For `tn_statute`, a baked citation-to-title index identifies the relevant Tennessee Code title. The server then fetches that title's HTML from the UniCourt and Public.Resource.Org publication hosted on GitHub Pages. It extracts the requested section using the section's anchor identifier rather than returning the entire title.

The returned statute remains the text from the 2021-05-21 release. The server adds a separate `later_acts` list when its index identifies later Public Chapters affecting the exact citation. These entries include the chapter, General Assembly, bill, source link, and action type such as amendment, repeal, or new section. The acts are explicitly not merged into the returned statute text.

`tn_search` searches the baked citation and catchline index. Its results can help locate provisions by topic or keyword, but the search does not inspect the complete wording of statutory bodies.

## Tools and capabilities

- `tn_statute(citation)` retrieves a T.C.A. section by citation and reports snapshot metadata.
- `tn_search(query, limit?)` searches indexed citations and official catchlines, with an optional result limit.
- Statute responses include `current_through` and `data_as_of` values identifying the snapshot date.
- Later-act metadata includes the Public Chapter number, legislative session information, bill link, action verb, and whether the change was merged. This server reports `merged: false` for these entries.
- The statute lookup covers all 68 published Tennessee titles in the selected mirror.
- Authentication is not required.

## Limitations and notes

The Tennessee Code MCP server does not provide the current consolidated Tennessee Code. Its statutory text stops at 2021-05-21, and amendments from roughly five later legislative sessions are not incorporated into that text. The later-act overlay can identify indexed changes, but it does not reconcile those changes with the frozen section or produce a current replacement text.

Public Chapters are session laws, not a consolidated code. They can show that a section was amended, repealed, or newly created, but using them to reconstruct the current statute requires separate legal and codification work. For matters where the exact current language controls, verify the result against an authoritative current source.

The server uses a public-domain transformed release because the maintained electronic T.C.A. is served through a cookie- and session-gated LexisNexis application. The package therefore should not be treated as an official Tennessee publication. Its search index is also narrower than full-text statutory search, and an empty `later_acts` list means the baked index found no matching act in the sessions it covers, not necessarily that no legal change exists.
