## Description
Browse TapColor coloring categories and collections — for AI assistants.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **list_categories** — All 25 categories with collection & page counts.
- **list_coloring_pages** — Collections with optional `category`, `q` (search), `limit`, `offset`.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "tapcolor": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@tapcolorapp/mcp"],
    "env": {
      "TAPCOLOR_API_KEY": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `TAPCOLOR_API_KEY` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What the tapcolor MCP server does

The tapcolor MCP server gives MCP-compatible AI assistants read access to TapColor’s coloring catalog through the TapColor Developer API. It is intended for browsing and discovery rather than creating or editing content. An assistant can inspect the available categories, see how many collections and pages each category contains, and retrieve collections that match a category or search term.

This server fits the 🎨 Art & Culture category because its data source is a coloring-content catalog. It can support requests such as finding animal-themed collections, identifying available categories, or narrowing results to a manageable set for a later assistant response.

## How it works

The package runs as an MCP process and communicates with the client over stdio. The client starts the package with `npx`, while the server uses the configured API key when calling the TapColor Developer API. The key is sent in the `api-key` request header.

The `list_categories` tool returns all 25 TapColor categories together with collection and page counts. The `list_coloring_pages` tool returns collections and accepts optional `category`, `q`, `limit`, and `offset` parameters. `category` narrows results by category, `q` supports a search term, and `limit` plus `offset` allow a client to control result size and pagination.

## Setup and configuration

To run the tapcolor MCP server, request an API key through TapColor’s contact page and store it as `TAPCOLOR_API_KEY`. The variable is required; the server cannot be configured from the provided material without it.

For Claude Desktop, add an MCP server entry that runs `npx -y @tapcolorapp/mcp` and passes the key in the entry’s `env` object. Restart Claude Desktop after changing its configuration. The package can also be started directly from a shell:

```bash
TAPCOLOR_API_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY npx -y @tapcolorapp/mcp
```

The implementation is built on TapColor’s official `@tapcolorapp/api` client. API documentation and a live explorer are available from the TapColor Developer API site.

## Tools and capabilities

- `list_categories`: Lists the complete set of 25 categories, including collection and page totals.
- `list_coloring_pages`: Lists coloring collections, with optional category filtering, text search, result limits, and offsets.

These tools are useful when an assistant needs to turn a broad request into a smaller, targeted set of TapColor collections. The server exposes catalog browsing only; the provided material does not describe tools for downloading, generating, modifying, or publishing coloring pages.

## Limitations and notes

The tapcolor MCP server requires a valid TapColor API key and an MCP client that can launch stdio servers. Its documented interface contains two read-oriented tools. Results depend on the TapColor Developer API, and the provided documentation does not specify response schemas, rate limits, pagination defaults, or behavior for invalid search terms and category values. Use the API documentation for details beyond the tool parameters listed here.
