## What tadas-github/a2asearch-mcp does

tadas-github/a2asearch-mcp lets an MCP-compatible assistant query the A2ASearch directory, which catalogs MCP servers, A2A agents, AI coding agents, CLI tools, agent skills, and other AI tools. Search and browse results can include names, descriptions, types, capabilities, source links, GitHub stars, languages, and last-commit dates when those values are available.

The server is intended for discovery and inspection. It can return a listing's README and documentation links, and its setup function can extract relevant instructions and JSON configuration examples. It does not install discovered tools, create credentials, contact listed providers, execute submitted code, or modify an MCP client's configuration.

## How it works

The server wraps the public A2ASearch REST API and exposes the directory through MCP tools. A typical workflow starts with `search_agents` using concise keywords such as `PDF`, `database`, or `browser automation`. The result includes a slug, which can then be passed to `get_agent` or `get_setup` for deeper inspection. `list_agents` provides a browsing path when filtering by type or sorting by stars or recent additions is more useful than keyword search.

Search and browse operations support pagination. Result limits range from 1 to 20, with a default of 10, and pages start at 1. Successful calls return structured content with a declared schema as well as serialized text for older clients. Missing directory values are represented as null.

## Setup and configuration

Node.js 22 or newer is required. Claude Desktop can launch the package with `npx -y a2asearch-mcp` through its MCP configuration, and Cursor can use the same command in `.cursor/mcp.json`. Other clients that support local stdio MCP servers can use the equivalent client-specific configuration.

A basic configuration uses the `a2asearch` server name, the `npx` command, and `-y a2asearch-mcp` as its argument. Pin the package version in the argument when reproducible installs are needed. Terminal users can run the server's companion CLI with `npx -y -p a2asearch-mcp a2asearch`, or install the package globally with npm.

## Tools and capabilities

- `search_agents` finds directory entries by keyword, with optional type, page, and result-limit parameters.
- `get_agent` retrieves detailed information for a listing identified by its kebab-case slug, including its README, capabilities, repository data, and links.
- `get_setup` returns focused setup excerpts, configuration examples, source links, and next steps for a listing.
- `list_agents` browses entries by optional type, star count, or newest additions.

The CLI supports directory aliases including `mcp`, `cli`, `agent`, `skill`, `a2a`, and `tool`. Its commands cover searching, listing, retrieving a specific entry, and requesting setup information; JSON output is available for directory operations and setup results.

## Limitations and notes

Search is keyword-based rather than semantic, and the API does not provide structured filters for pricing or authentication. Directory data also does not establish runtime reliability, security, hosting, or protocol-test status.

Setup extraction may return links only when supported instructions or configuration examples cannot be found. A submitted URL ending in `/mcp` or `/sse` is treated as an endpoint candidate, not as a verified or contacted endpoint. Requests time out after 15 seconds, observe client cancellation, and may return HTTP 429 responses with a retry interval. The package is MIT licensed.
