## What suleyman416/mcp-applemusic MCP server does

suleyman416/mcp-applemusic MCP server connects an AI agent to Apple Music on macOS through a FastMCP interface. Its 74 tools cover playback, track ratings and favorites, volume, shuffle, repeat, seeking, equalizer presets, lyrics, metadata, artwork, catalog search, artist discovery, playlists, folders, and audio inspection.

The server also supports higher-level music workflows. Agents can import public Spotify playlists or albums, convert M3U playlists, generate cross-service links through song.link, retrieve Apple Music charts and new releases, and export or organize playlists. DJ features include BPM and start/finish metadata, playlist crossfades, and a background autonomous DJ mode. Listening features include a local journal, monthly Replay reports, listening-history analysis, and a personality profile.

## How it works

The server is intended for macOS systems with the Music app installed. It controls Music.app locally and may use external services for selected discovery features, including LRCLIB for lyrics and song.link for universal sharing links. Spotify importing is described as working with public playlist and album URLs without logins or tokens.

Listening data is stored in a local SQLite database, with a background scrobbler daemon available for continuous tracking. AirPlay and audio controls can address output devices and per-device levels where supported by the local Music environment. The first run requires macOS permission for the AI client or terminal to automate Music.app.

## Setup and configuration

To run the suleyman416/mcp-applemusic MCP server, install macOS Music, Python 3.13 or newer, and the uv package manager. The documented standard configuration starts the package with `uvx` and the `apple-music-mcp` executable:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "applemusic": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["apple-music-mcp"]
    }
  }
}
```

This configuration can be placed in Claude Desktop settings or the applicable MCP settings for Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Cline, or Roo. Smithery provides a Claude installation command, and the repository also documents installation through the Agensi marketplace or a bundled `SKILL.md` file. On first launch, allow the client or terminal to control Music.app in macOS Privacy & Security settings.

## Tools and capabilities

Representative tool groups include:

- Playback: play, pause, skip, seek, inspect the current track, set volume, mute, shuffle, and repeat.
- Library and metadata: search tracks, edit tags, inspect audio properties, set BPM and timing offsets, and manage ratings.
- Discovery: search the Apple Music catalog, find artist albums and top tracks, retrieve charts and new releases, and fetch lyrics.
- Playlists: create playlists and folders, import public Spotify sources, handle M3U conversion, deduplicate or sort content, and export playlist data.
- DJ and analytics: configure crossfades, start or stop the autonomous DJ daemon, inspect its status, record listening history, and produce Replay-style reports.
- Sharing and audio: create universal song links, control AirPlay output, adjust EQ, and inspect stream information.

## Limitations and notes

The project is macOS-specific and depends on the Apple Music app being installed. Automation permission is required before local playback and library operations can work. Spotify import is documented for public playlists and albums; the supplied material does not describe support for private Spotify content. No environment variables are documented for the standard setup.
