Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **academy_welcome** — ALWAYS call this first when a user connects or asks what this is. Returns a short orientation for StudioMeyer Academy — a free 6-level 'Memory-First AI Operator' curriculum (Levels 1-3 fundamentals, 4-6 memory/MCP/multi-agent), plus playbooks and build recipes. Read it back to the user in their language and offer to start at their level.
- **academy_levels** — List the 6 curriculum levels with title, subtitle and lesson count. Use to show the user the learning path and ask where they want to start.
- **academy_lessons** — List all lessons in a level (titles, descriptions, duration). No body — call academy_lesson for the full text.
- **academy_lesson** — Get the FULL text of one lesson. Teach it to the user: explain it in your own words, answer questions, give examples. This is how a user 'takes the course' with you as tutor.
- **academy_playbooks** — List hands-on playbooks (short, practical how-tos for Claude Code, MCP, memory, agents). Optional category filter.

## What StudioMeyer Academy MCP server does

StudioMeyer Academy MCP server exposes an educational curriculum through the Model Context Protocol. The material covers six levels and includes 63 lessons, 104 practical playbooks, and 63 build recipes. Content is available in German, English, and Spanish, with English used by default.

The first three levels introduce LLM fundamentals, prompting, and basic automation. Later levels address persistent memory, MCP, hooks and skills, multi-agent workflows, and creating and selling an MCP server. The package is intended for interactive learning inside an AI client rather than for operating an external business system.

## How it works

The npm package contains a bundled copy of the curriculum, so the core learning tools do not need an account, API key, database, or network connection. An assistant can begin with `academy_welcome`, inspect the learning path, retrieve lessons, and search the curriculum. `academy_tutor_context` packages lesson material so the connected AI can explain it or use it during tutoring.

There are two deployment models. The local stdio process runs through `npx -y mcp-academy` and provides the offline library. A hosted Streamable HTTP endpoint is available at `https://mcp.studiomeyer.academy/mcp`; that option supports sign-in and remembers course progress. ChatGPT and other remote connectors use the hosted URL rather than a local command.

With `ACADEMY_API_KEY` configured for stdio, the local process can call the Academy REST bridge for account features. These include statistics, next-lesson recommendations, completion updates, quizzes and submissions, reviews and grading, certificates, and the Pro tutor. The hosted course offers the same account features through OAuth instead of a shared API key.

## Setup and configuration

For Claude Code, register the process with:

For clients using JSON MCP configuration, define `npx` as the command and pass `-y` and `mcp-academy` as arguments. The README specifically shows this pattern for Cursor, Claude Desktop, and Codex.

Set `ACADEMY_API_KEY` only when personal progress or other account-backed features are needed. Keys can be created from the Academy dashboard. `ACADEMY_BASE_URL` defaults to `https://studiomeyer.academy` and is intended for the real Academy origin or a local Academy instance during development; it is where the API key is sent.

The repository also documents an HTTP mode using `--http` and `ACADEMY_MCP_PORT`. Running that mode as a self-hosted endpoint requires the Academy database, a public base URL, SMTP for magic links, and optional Google or Discord credentials for those sign-in methods. Each request needs a caller Bearer token.

## Tools and capabilities

StudioMeyer Academy MCP server includes tools for:

- Orientation and course navigation with `academy_welcome` and `academy_levels`.
- Listing and reading levels, lessons, playbooks, and recipes.
- Full-curriculum search with `academy_search`.
- Preparing lesson content for AI tutoring with `academy_tutor_context`.

## Limitations and notes

The offline package does not provide persistent progress, quizzes, certificates, or the account tutor without authentication. Quiz answer keys and the tutor system prompt are kept on the server and are not included in the package. The HTTP mode is not a no-configuration local service: it requires authentication and Academy infrastructure, including Postgres. `ACADEMY_API_KEY` is ignored in HTTP mode because requests must represent individual callers.
