## What Stripe MCP MCP server does

Stripe MCP MCP server gives MCP-compatible AI clients read access to selected Stripe records. It covers customers, payment intents, subscriptions, invoices, and refunds. The available operations are limited to listing records or retrieving individual customers, payments, and subscriptions by ID.

The server is read-only by design. It does not expose tools for creating charges, issuing refunds, changing records, or deleting data. It also refuses to start when the configured key begins with `sk_live_` or `rk_live_`, so its intended use is Stripe test data.

## How it works

An MCP host starts the package as a local process, normally with `npx -y @devtechtricks/stripe-mcp`. The host supplies the Stripe credential as an environment variable, and the server uses that credential for its read operations. A source checkout can instead run `index.js` with Node after installing dependencies.

The package uses standard MCP configuration with a command, arguments, and environment values. Cursor, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Windsurf, and other MCP hosts can register the same server configuration. When running from source, `index.js` can load a local `.env` file if `STRIPE_SECRET_KEY` is not already present; npm installations do not include that file, so installed clients should pass the variable explicitly.

## Setup and configuration

Create an MCP entry that runs `npx -y @devtechtricks/stripe-mcp`, then set `STRIPE_SECRET_KEY` to a Stripe test secret such as `sk_test_...` or `rk_test_...`. The README recommends a restricted key with read scopes where possible. Test keys can be obtained from the test API keys area of the Stripe Dashboard.

For development, clone the repository, run `npm install`, copy `.env.example` to `.env`, and add the test key. The source configuration then points the MCP client at the repository’s `index.js` with Node. Claude Code can also register the package through its `claude mcp add` command.

## Tools and capabilities

The Stripe MCP MCP server exposes these tools:

- `list_customers`: Lists recent customers, optionally filtered by `limit` and `email`.
- `get_customer`: Retrieves one customer using `customer_id`.
- `list_payments`: Lists recent payment intents, with optional `limit` and `customer_id` filters.
- `get_payment`: Retrieves one payment intent using `payment_intent_id`.
- `list_subscriptions`: Lists subscriptions, optionally filtered by `limit`, `customer_id`, and `status`.
- `get_subscription`: Retrieves one subscription using `subscription_id`.
- `list_invoices`: Lists invoices with optional `limit`, `customer_id`, and `status` filters.
- `list_refunds`: Lists refunds, optionally filtered by `limit` and `payment_intent_id`.

These tools support workflows such as finding a customer, checking that customer’s subscriptions, reviewing payment intents, or examining refunds associated with a payment intent. Individual invoice retrieval is not listed as an available operation.

## Limitations and notes

Only Stripe test keys are supported. The server is intended for inspection rather than account administration, and its tool set does not provide write operations. Keep the secret in the MCP client environment rather than assuming a packaged npm installation will contain a `.env` file.
