## Documentation

## What StashBase MCP server does

The StashBase MCP server exposes selected files from a local StashBase project to an external MCP client. Agents can read project material, search it, and make edits to supported files. This supports workflows such as drafting from notes, locating source material, updating documents, and revising writing in an existing project.

StashBase is a local-first writing workspace. Projects are ordinary folders on the computer, and removing a project from the application does not delete those files. The application can work with notes, PDFs, Word documents, and scans; PDF and Word text extraction and OCR run locally when the relevant components are available.

## How it works

Keep the StashBase application running, select the project that the external agent should access, and add the MCP connection to the client. StashBase provides the connection configuration from its settings rather than requiring a separate MCP package or hosted project. The external client then uses the exposed file operations within the selected project.

The built-in Chat agents connect to StashBase’s tools automatically. External clients use the configuration under `Settings → Advanced → External apps (MCP)`. The linked configuration documentation provides client examples, transport details, and access settings.

## Setup and configuration

Install StashBase on macOS 12 or later, Windows 10 or later, or a community-supported Linux x86_64 system running Debian 12 or Ubuntu 22.04 or later. macOS users can install the application with Homebrew or download a platform-specific release. Open or create a local project folder before configuring an external client.

To connect an external client:

1. Start StashBase and open the target project.
2. Open `Settings → Advanced → External apps (MCP)`.
3. Copy the displayed connection configuration into the MCP client.
4. Use the client to access the project’s supported files.

The StashBase MCP server requires StashBase to remain running while the external client uses the connection. Agent runtime requirements depend on the client and provider being used.

## Tools and capabilities

The exposed capabilities described in the project documentation are:

- Reading supported files in the selected project
- Searching project content
- Editing supported files
- Working with local notes, documents, and source material

The workspace also includes a file tree, editor, document previews, and keyword search. Meaning-based search is a separate feature that requires an OpenAI or OpenRouter key and sends source text and queries to the selected embedding provider; it is not described as a prerequisite for the MCP connection.

## Limitations and notes

The StashBase MCP server only exposes the project selected in the application and depends on StashBase staying open. The supplied material does not specify individual MCP tool names or a complete file-format matrix for external access, so compatibility with a particular file type should be verified in the application.

Documents remain local, but agent prompts and relevant context may be sent to model services. Usage statistics and error diagnostics are enabled by default for packaged builds and source runs, excluding document and conversation content; this can be disabled in `Settings → General → Privacy`.
