## What starreel does

starreel exposes StarReel’s AI video-production workflow to MCP-compatible agents. A project can begin with a raw script and proceed through script rewriting, cast and scene extraction, character and environment references, storyboards, keyframes, video shots, voiceover, music, sound effects, and final composition. The result can be retrieved as a downloadable MP4 link.

The server supports four project types: `drama`, `ad`, `mv`, and `brand_film`. It also includes subtitle translation and localization jobs, advertising product assets, and a music-video path from lyrics to story to script.

## How it works

The normal workflow starts with project creation and script setup. Agents can use the built-in production path or bring prepared material through format checks and import tools. Existing storyboards, structured JSON, portraits, scene images, props, and shot images can be uploaded or imported. A finished shot list can bypass script rewriting and breakdown.

StarReel handles production-side operations such as character-consistency gates, frame chaining, best-of-N auditing, and billing. The server acts as the client layer while the processing runs through StarReel’s backend.

Paid stages use a quote-then-generate pattern. The agent obtains a quote, presents it for confirmation, and passes the returned `quote_id` to generation. Preauthorization prevents a vendor operation from starting when the account balance is insufficient. Episode composition, transitions, sound-effects matching, and deliverable packaging are free.

## Setup and configuration

Create a StarReel API key with the `produce` scope, then run the package with Node.js 18 or newer:

Set `STARREEL_API_KEY` in the MCP client configuration. The key is shown once when created and can be revoked from StarReel settings. Claude Code can add the server with its MCP command, while clients that accept an `mcpServers` JSON block can use the standard stdio configuration. Codex CLI, VS Code agent mode, and Gemini CLI have their own equivalent configuration formats.

Tool descriptions and server instructions default to Simplified Chinese. Set `STARREEL_MCP_LANG=en` to request the English server instructions and English catalog entries where available; untranslated tool descriptions fall back to Chinese. The same setting sends the language preference to the backend.

For environments that cannot run Node.js or `npx`, the `/v1/produce/*` REST endpoints provide the same pipeline. The packaged `SKILL.md` can be added to an agent’s system prompt to provide workflow order, billing rules, and failure-handling guidance.

## Tools and capabilities

- Generate character portraits, character sheets, world concepts, and art bibles.
- Quote and generate storyboards, frames, and video shots.
- Generate TTS, background music, sound effects, cloned voices, or designed voices.
- Compose episodes, retrieve final cuts, render multiple aspect ratios, and create posters or covers.
- Translate subtitles and run localization jobs.

Voice design creates candidate voices from a description without requiring a sample. Candidates must be reviewed before one is saved and assigned to a character or narrator. Generated candidates remain available for six hours, with one design at a time per account and a limit of 30 designs per 24 hours.

## Limitations and notes

Production spending requires a prepaid StarReel balance and user confirmation for quoted stages. API keys are exchanged for short-lived tokens, and the server depends on the StarReel service for processing and billing. English catalog coverage is being expanded, so some tool descriptions may remain in Simplified Chinese when English entries are unavailable. Voice design must not be used to imitate a real person, and its preview sentence must be 14–28 characters long.
