## Description
Web search with full-page content and grounded answers from the Staan API.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **web_search** — Searches the web through `POST /v2/search/web`. Each call returns one page of up to 10 results
- **answer** — Asks `POST /v2/answer` for an answer grounded in web sources (or in sources you supply). The

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `uvx` (confidence: high):

    "command": "uvx",
    "args": ["staan-mcp"],
    "env": {

**Requires environment variables:** `STAAN_API_KEY` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What Staan MCP server does

The Staan MCP server exposes the Staan web search API to MCP-compatible agents. Staan is the Search Trusted API Access Network, a European search engine with its own index and an emphasis on European markets and parts of the Commonwealth. The project is an independent MCP interface and is not affiliated with Staan, European Perspective, Qwant, or Ecosia.

This server belongs in the 🔎 Search & Data Extraction category. It is useful when an agent needs to find current web sources, retrieve page content, or produce an answer that includes citations rather than relying only on the model’s existing knowledge.

## How it works

The server sends tool requests to two Staan API endpoints. `web_search` calls `POST /v2/search/web`; each call returns one page containing up to 10 results. Searches can optionally include the full content of returned pages in Markdown or HTML, and can target one or multiple Staan markets.

`answer` calls `POST /v2/answer`. It returns a Markdown answer grounded in web sources, or in sources supplied by the caller, with citations rendered as GitHub-style footnotes. The quality and availability of responses therefore depend on the Staan API and the access associated with the configured key.

The default transport is stdio. The installed package also supports streamable HTTP and stateless streamable HTTP. HTTP deployments can optionally use an OAuth 2.1 resource-server gate.

## Setup and configuration

A Staan API key is required. Create one through the Staan console, then provide it as the `STAAN_API_KEY` environment variable. The free subscription includes 1,000 requests per month, according to the project documentation.

The simplest package-based setup uses Python 3.11 or newer with `uvx staan-mcp`, or installs the package with `pip install staan-mcp`. An MCP client that launches stdio commands can run the server with `uvx` and pass the key through its environment. The repository documents configurations for Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code, and VS Code.

There are also installation-free stdio options. A checkout can be run with a plain Python 3.11-or-newer interpreter, and a single-file `.pyz` bundle is available from releases. These options do not provide HTTP transports or the OAuth gate. The installed package includes the dependencies needed for the full transport set.

## Tools and capabilities

- `web_search`: Searches the Staan web index through `POST /v2/search/web`.
- Optional full-page results: Requests page content as Markdown or HTML.
- Multi-market search: Searches one or several Staan markets in a single request.
- `answer`: Requests a source-grounded response through `POST /v2/answer`.
- Citation output: Returns answers as Markdown with GitHub-style footnotes.

## Limitations and notes

The `answer` endpoint is invitation-only. Even after an invitation has been granted, the endpoint may be temporarily disabled and return a 403 Forbidden response. Applications should account for that possibility instead of assuming that both tools are always available.

The free Staan subscription has a stated limit of 1,000 requests per month. API usage is therefore subject to the limits and availability of the Staan account.

The Staan MCP server is an independent project rather than an official Staan, European Perspective, Qwant, or Ecosia integration. HTTP and OAuth support are available only through the installed package; the checkout and release-bundle approaches provide stdio only.
