## What ssave.cc — TikTok & Instagram Downloader MCP server does

The ssave.cc — TikTok & Instagram Downloader MCP server gives an MCP client access to media extraction and local file downloads for TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Douyin URLs. It supports HD video without a watermark where available, watermark-preserved video, and MP3 audio export through the download flow.

The server is intended for personal archiving of content the user is allowed to access. The project advises respecting platform terms of service and does not support bulk downloading.

## How it works

The server runs locally as a standard-input/standard-output process and uses the Ssave Open API behind the scenes. A typical workflow starts with `extract_media`, which accepts a supported URL and returns metadata, available formats, an `ssv_` identifier, and format-specific download URLs.

The returned identifier is then passed to `download_media` with a requested type such as `hd`, `watermark`, or `mp3`. The server streams the selected file to disk and reports its absolute path and size. Extraction identifiers expire after approximately 5–15 minutes, so downloads should follow extraction within that window.

`get_thumbnail` saves the media thumbnail locally through a proxy. It does not return the original source CDN URL to the client.

## Setup and configuration

Start the package with:

Add that command as an MCP server in Claude Code, Cursor, or Claude Desktop. The repository also documents development commands for installing dependencies, running the stdio server, testing with mocked fetch requests, and compiling the project.

All configuration variables are optional. `SSAVE_API_BASE_URL` changes the API endpoint, `SSAVE_API_KEY` is reserved for the paid tier, and `SSAVE_OUTPUT_DIR` sets the default download directory. Unless overridden, files go to `~/Downloads/ssave/`; individual downloads can also provide an `output_dir` value.

## Tools and capabilities

The free tier allows 10 extraction operations and 50 downloads per IP per UTC day. When the API returns a rate-limit response, the tool reports the UTC reset time.

## Limitations and notes

The service is backed by the Ssave Open API, so API availability and free-tier quotas affect operation. Extraction tokens are temporary and should not be treated as permanent media references. No registration is required for the free tier, while the API-key setting is reserved for a future paid tier.
