## What Sippion MCP server does

Sippion MCP server gives AI coding agents a focused way to inspect a local repository. Rather than opening broad sections of many files, an agent submits a natural-language request to `repo_context`, such as a search for authentication token validation. The server returns a small, bounded group of relevant source excerpts for the agent to review.

Retrieval is local and read-only. Sippion does not modify repository files, execute repository code, or maintain a persistent index. Its retrieval state remains in RAM, and high-confidence secrets are redacted before content is returned to the model.

## How it works

An MCP-compatible coding agent sends a context request to Sippion. The server applies lexical, structural, and semantic retrieval to identify relevant repository content, then returns selected excerpts rather than complete files or an unrestricted directory dump. This approach is intended to reduce the amount of context an agent consumes during coding tasks.

Structural parsing currently covers Rust, Python, JavaScript and TypeScript, Go, Java, C#, C, and C++. Sippion is a repository-context tool, not a compiler or language server.

## Setup and configuration

Install on macOS or Linux with the project’s bootstrap shell command, or use the PowerShell bootstrap command on Windows. After installation, restart the AI client and run `sippion setup` to register the server for supported clients named by the project, including Codex and Claude Code.

The command-line interface also provides `sippion doctor` for diagnostics, `sippion uninstall` for removal, and `sippion mcp --root-auto` for launching the MCP process with automatic repository-root handling.

## Tools and capabilities

Sippion MCP server exposes one MCP tool:

- `repo_context`: accepts a repository-context query and returns a limited set of relevant source excerpts.

The server does not run build scripts, compilers, language servers, or shell commands during retrieval. Repository text is treated as untrusted data, and secret redaction is applied before output reaches the model. These properties make it suitable for inspecting code where execution and write access are not required.

## Limitations and notes

Sippion is designed for local repository context retrieval, not code execution, compilation, or language-server features. It provides one MCP tool rather than a broad project-management or editing interface. Structural retrieval is documented for the listed programming languages; the material does not claim equivalent structural parsing for other languages.

Sippion MCP server can reduce unnecessary context sent to an agent, which may help both API-based workflows and subscription-based coding plans use their allowances more efficiently. It does not guarantee a particular token reduction, and the returned excerpts remain bounded rather than providing a complete repository view.
